I love these threads, although some FR die-hards think they are a waste of bandwidth. The Ciderhouse Rules would certainly qualify in the recent films category. Going back to the classics, how about The Grapes of Wrath?

I'd have to agree with "The Grapes of Wrath." One of the few movies directed by John Ford that I don't like.

I just saw the Grapes of Wrath on AMC or parts of it the other night. When we got to the part about the clean, well run,efficient safe government camp, well that was just too much for me.....

I think Grapes of Wrath may be the most liberal movie of all time or maybe the most influential liberal movie. Certainly for its time it was way out of the mainstream and I believe it won best picture?

The Grapes of Wrath

The best choice. It also shows the old-style, not completely unsympathetic liberal mindset: naive, class-oriented, square dealish, somewhat dishonest ("truck drivers"), but not today's purely self-centered, cheaply emotional, tribal liberal.

I watched Grapes of Wrath recently. It was a great movie. I don't know if Steinbeck wrote the screenplay or if it was some fellow traveler. But if somebody was looking up from the bottom of the Depression it may have seemed that government was the answer. We know better of course--but we can see how others may have arrived at that conclusion.

" GRAPES OF WRATH " is probably tied with " OUR DAILY BREAD ' , and both easily beat out any more modern movie ! " OUR DAILY BREAD " is a pure, unadulterated paean to COMMUNISUM ! It is far more lauditory of Communism, than " REDS " ever dreamed of being. It is the kind of propaganda film, that led McCarthy to try to out the Comies in Holywood. It is blatant beyond belief !

Going back to the classics, how about The Grapes of Wrath?

Haven't seen the movie, but I read the novel. Boy, did it suck; achingly dull too.

Of Mice And Men was a better effort from Steinbeck IMO. It had this "It's a tough old world and that's just the way it is" vibe to it.
