Bill O'Reilly has been discussing this all week. He said that the pedophiles in the church make up about 6%, the same percent found in the general population. When I heard that stat, it made me wonder why it is being blown out of proportion to seem like it constitutes the majority of Catholic priests.
Then I began to think that 1 out of 20 (!) people are/have been pedophiles. Pretty scary if true.
Lots of statistics are being bandied about with all the usual problems. I think the 6% was referring to the per centage of pedophila cases found amid the the sexual abuse cases. I know I have heard that of the 80 offenders turned over by the Boston diocese less than 10% were actually pedophile priests.
