dwollman - Damn hackers, always leavin pizza boxes everywhere, wear their hats backwards, raggedy jeans, wouldnt know a BALR (14,13) if it bit ya in the butt! (Neither would I anymore, thank goodness)!

JR - after playing some on the BETA system (w/o benefit of the cheap crap I was sippin last night), I think you are on to a good thing. Looks like most comments are either positive, or have only minor suggestions. Keep up the fine work!

The first one -- what country is that, .ch? I guess if you search the world, you'll find one.

The other was a UK company trying to sell java services, hence the applet.

So forgive me, if I was absolute, and said there weren't any anywhere in the world. But my analysis still seems correct. Clearly the fellow above was referring to JavaScript menus which can sometimes be slow to load. He was likely not referring to Java applets, which maybe 15 people in the world would be insane enough to use. It's just not the right technology for that.

An applet is an application, not at all for website navigation. Anymore than you should build a game out of JavaScript.

Now you can go out and find me links to JavaScript games. I've seen a pretty good battleship, in fact. But I'm still correct in saying you don't build games out of JavaScript.

You don't build web page navigation out of java applets. Basically no one does.

Nothing like Java when a simple 2K GIF would do ...

Agreed.

If you find anyone using an applet for a simple web page navigation, I agree that they made a poor decision.

You should only use an applet if you need the functionality only an applet can give you, like for an online application. Not for a simple web page.

Now, can we not bother these nice folks with your personal anti-Java campaign?

I won't respond again in this thread, because I don't think this is the appropriate place for what you're trying to do. We can continue this in the other 15 threads you're doing this. No need to clutter up this one here.

Ciao.

How do I customize the sidebar?

1. Click on "Topics" on the links listed at top right.

2. Select whatever topic you'd like from the list (scrolling down you'll see Breaking News, Extended News, etc.). You'll need to click the link for a topic you want to appear on the sidebar.

3. Once you see a list of recent articles posted for your selected topic, click on the link at middle left to add this topic to your sidebar.

4. Repeat for all topics you want on the sidebar.

It took a couple days to get the nerve up to change. But I did - finally.

I like it. I like the control over the right side column.

You are doing a GREAT Job! THANKS!

Russ

p.s. -- Not that anybody cares, but a very good friend of mine is the father of the term "Beta Test." When I first clicked to make the change, I accidently clicked on the link "Beta" (although it clearly says, "Click Here" to implement the change). Anyway, I saw the derivation of the term and was pleased to see that it was accurate - although my friend's name was not mentioned.

Thanks, that is awesome. I removed the fixed attribute, scrolling made me dizzy.

Still doesn't work on old Netscape though. :-( But it's better than having the background repeated in every cell! (Stupid Netscape)

I'll have it in the beta later tonight probably.

I stand corrected. It does indeed work in Netscape 4.x. For whatever reason, Netscape wants JavaScript enabled to view styled tags. What!?

Netscape looks much better now.

YEA JOHN ROBINSON AS USUAL.

Please keep up the good work while taking care of yourself and those close to you by having fun and getting sufficient rest. You're a real trooper and a real loved trooper, John.

The new software stuff is fine with me.

You wouldn't happen to know how to make WebTV honor zero-width page margins? marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" style="margin: 0px" and yet WebTV still makes a margin; and with the background style on the body, the background shows through the margin around the page headers.

yea, i actually use this on all pages that need 0 sized margins...

< body marginheight="0" topmargin="0" vspace="0" marginwidth="0" leftmargin="0" hspace="0" style="margin:0; padding:0;margin-bottom : 0;" >

It pretty much covers all the bases.

I've been using the beta for two days now, and the left margin seems to be having problems tonight -- disappearing on some thread screens; making it hard to read.

Make that both margins -- on thread screens only.

I hate it. It is counterintuitive and nasty.

It reminds me of Laocoon, wrestling with snakes and losing.

I even hate the new "non-Beta" FR.

There was nothing wrong -- nothing "broken" about the old format--it was much easier to use and navigate.

The new one has a "mind of its own" and refuses to bow to the user's preferences.

I hate the "news/activism" and "general" threads. We need more organization, not less. And I still don't understand why there is not an "environmentalism" topic.

It stinx.

Well, they cant please all and you seem to be very hard to please. But no progammer thinks his software is "good enough". You see, there is always room to enhance and improve.

Good Job John and Jim

After having "played" with the Beta version I have a couple of questions.

1: Will there be a "notify" on the new version?

2: On the current version sidebars, "Breaking News" was on top, "Front Page News" below, now it is vice-versa.

How do I change that? I have tried subscribing to Breaking news 1st, then Front page next (after clearing my cookies) with no change...

Notification is handled through highlighting of "My Mail" and "My Comments" on the top bar.

The order of the sidebar topics depends on the posting time of the top article in each topic. That is, the topic with the most recent article is the topic displayed first. At a later time there will be a function to choose the order.
