INS Agents Get Bonuses After 9/11 Gaffe
NewsMax.com ^ | 3/19/02 | Carl Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff

News last week that the Immigration and Naturalization Service awarded student visas to 9/11 hijackers Mohamed Atta and Marwan Al-Shehhi was a major embarrassment for the Bush administration.

But the brouhaha apparently wasn't enough to stop INS Commissioner James W. Ziglar from rewarding his employees within days of the gaffe.

Ziglar was in California last week while the story was reverberating everywhere, handing out cash bonuses and days off to West Coast INS workers for outstanding service, reported the San Francisco Examiner's P.J. Corkery.

No doubt the INS has many fine and dedicated employees who deserve a pat on the back from time to time. But was last week really the best time for handing out commendations?

I thought they tried to blame this on civilian sub-contractors.

See why the is no hope for this nation. You all say we have a conservative in office & he can't/won't stop the government from growing - even in a recession.

There was an article posted recently that detailed that Ashcroft said he didn't have the authority to fire federal employees in light of the recent screwups.

Have you seen it?

That's reassuring! Especially in light of our new nose-picking baggage screeners. Another case of lifetime employment (20 years out on full pension)

The INS apparently runs around like a headless chicken. They make their sister agency the IRS look efficient and polished by comparison.

"Jim Ziglar is an experienced manager who will work diligently to reform the INS. He has strong relationships with Republicans and Democrats in the Congress and has worked in both the public and private sectors. His history of overseeing large organizations and tackling management challenges makes Jim an excellent choice as Commissioner of the INS," - George W. Bush

"If we can find a way to move illegal immigrants into legal channels, we would enable the border patrol to focus on the bad guys coming across the border rather than the people coming across to work."
James Ziglar (1-202-514-1900)

"Individuals will be held responsible" - Hahahahahaha!!!!

Attorney General John D. Ashcroft also asked Congress today to give him back authority to fire INS employees for violating Justice Department rules.

Chastened INS chief makes personnel changes

Sorry, you can't fire federal employees for breaking the law, destroying the Republic, or having sex on a government issued table across from their computers which have just accessed hot porn. If they blow the whistle on goverment corruption, usually, they can be run off. It's mysterious, isn't it?

What ought to bother everyone more than the two visas--is how many total (hundreds, thousands?) visas were sent out and how many went to people under deportation orders and otherwise hiding out.

If INS controls allowed them to "misstep" regarding the infamous 19--and that fact revealed only by the flight school, after the INS tried to coverup--there can be no question the bulk of the "problem" is being kept from public view.

With PC Minetta at the airports and the ex-Senate Sgt at Arms running INS at the borders,
the USA is in--and is going to stay in--big trouble.

Larry, Shep, and Moe would be a big improvement.

The Undocumented Immigrant: Heroes or criminals?
"Recently I had the opportunity to interview the director of National Security of the United States, Tom Ridge, and he said to me that " technically it is possible to define the undocumented as criminals." After saying that to me - seeking to prevent a counterattack by the Mexican side - added that although these immigrants had broken the law most of them are "good people and good workers."

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) says it has no plans to round up the 250,000 to 300,000 illegal aliens that it admits are still in the country even though they have already been ordered deported by federal judges - October 22, 2001

INS Releases 35,318 Criminal Aliens
"U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) estimate that 11,605 – or roughly one-third of those released by the INS – went on to commit serious crimes including 1,845 violent crimes."

Bonus=Hush money. Keep them happy, and they won't blame the bosses for the screw-ups.

I read this article someplace - I think NewsMax - where Ashcroft said he could not fire these people. This should be changed as soon as possible. Too many big-time losers are attracted to work in Government for this very reason. Same holds true for bad teachers and professors who are tenured. It's truly dumb and dangerous to not be able to fire incompetent people. And if AG Ascroft can get this reversed, the first person he should get rid of is the head of the INS.
