Gray Davis: "Being Governor is worse than 'Nam"

The Buzz: Editorial meeting unplugs Davis' restraint

By Kevin Yamamura -- Bee Capitol Bureau

Published 2:15 a.m. PST Monday, March 18, 2002

Something about newspaper editorial board meetings makes the governor go gonzo.

In the latest edition of Gray Davis Unplugged (and Unglued), the normally restrained governor told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he "saved this friggin' paper" and that last year's energy fight was "worse than being in Vietnam."

Recall that in another editorial board meeting, with the San Francisco Chronicle in 1999, Davis declared it was the job of lawmakers to "implement my vision." That peeved legislators who had visions of their own.

But his latest comments were some of his most interesting yet.

"I kept the lights on," Davis said. "And this sounds a little presumptuous, but I think I should at least get a round of applause. I don't get squat."

He also was testy when questioned about criticism that he panicked and paid too much for power in long-term state agreements for electricity.

"If I didn't panic, you wouldn't be able to put out your paper," he said. "I saved this friggin' paper. I kept the lights on in this state, do you understand that?"

A Vietnam veteran, Davis also made a controversial comparison when describing the energy crisis: "This is like a war. This is worse than being in Vietnam. This is a full-out war against me."

Later, Davis talked about his role as global dominator. "When I took the oath of office, we were the seventh-largest economy on the planet," he said. "We passed Italy the first year, France my second year, and we will pass the U.K. in two years."

Davis was a captain in the Army and served in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

And Gray Davis did it all by himself.

How about California worse than 'Nam because of the governor? Country being ravaged because of 'poor' leadership, and self-serving politics.

Okay, at least warn us of future posts/replies from you!

After this reply of yours, my keyboard is soggy from the water I was drinking:

This guy makes Senator McInsane seem like a cross between Shirley Temple and Gandi.

I can just see a curly topped minature Ghandi dancing and singing!

"I kept the lights on," Davis said.

Davis in his recent try-out to become next Motel 6 radio spokesperson.

"No, no, Mr. Davis!" cried the script director in growing frustration. "You're supposed to say, 'We'll leave the lights on for you.' Try again. Take 92, record now.!"

Then aside to his assistant, the director mutters, "I always knew he had a face meant for radio, but apparently he isn't going to cut it here, either."

Blackout Davis only kept th eenergy flowing so his strawberries won't go bad. Pretty soon he will accuse us of stealing them.

Someone please send this man some ball-bearings, so he can play with them with his fingers! The safety of all Californians may depend on Davis having some way to release the stress he is under.

Remember, if he is reelected, this guy is talked about as a Vice Presidential candidate. He could, in the worst case scenario, have his finger on the nuclear Red Button!

"If I didn't panic, you wouldn't be able to put out your paper,"

He panicked and locked the state into long-term electricity contracts at the peak prices!

LOL -- I remember the old Virginia Slims TV ad. Perhap's Davis can star in an "updated" version wearing a pair of his favorite pumps.

This is worse than being in Vietnam.

I think the same political system we opposed in 'Nam is being implemented under Gray Davis in CA. Maybe that's what he means.

Who is the Property Rights Atty. who just came out for the Rep. ticket thru a home magaxine here in Or. called MidnightMagazine.com. Dang I gave the copy that came snail mail. I cannot recal his name.
Also I was wondering if his way of announcing was to have this newpaper (underground) send a free copy to my son and I otherwise I would have never seen this edition.
