THE FIGHTING IRISH (69th)

- In 1851, a group of immigrants formed a militia Regiment to protect their new homes and their families. And they did...First on their own soil -- Then in France -- Then in the Pacific. And now -- at their nation's darkest hour -- they defend their homes and families again. On their own soil -- in their own city -- in New York. The home, for 150 years, of the fighting 69th.

Gentle When Stroked, Fierce When Provoked."

On October 12, 2001 the Fighting 69th celebrated 150 years of service to the nation and the State of New York. Perhaps the most famous infantry regiment in the U.S., their history, from the 69th New York State Militia to the present day 69th Infantry (Mechanized) tells many stories...

Stories of immigrants, struggling against prejudice in their adopted land. The way they assimilated into that land's society and the way they changed that society in the process...

Stories of the sons and grandsons of immigrants who fought with unquestioned patriotism in the war to end war, and in the war after that one...

Stories told against the background of a nation growing in industrial, economic and political power...

Stories of volunteers and of draftees, of heroes and ordinary soldiers, of priests, poets, and politicians, of laborers, lawyers, leaders and loafers.

These web pages will attempt to tell some of those stories and to honor those who have served in its ranks and who still serve to this day.

Wonder if these dear Marines are reminiscing about St. Patty's Day past? I don't think there are MRE's with corned beef and cabbage. God Bless and Keep them all....

We here at FR know the value of good friends and neighbors. And our country is learning that Canada is a good friend and neighbor. They are generally thought of as peace-niks but here they are fighting with us in Afghan in the War Against Terror.

According to the caption, this is the FIRST TIME since the Korean War that Canadian troops have been sent into battle.

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!

Over at a friend's house babysitting and getting laundry done. Kids are settled in, watching a movie cause it's cold and rainy outside. Heard from the hubby yesterday. He has duty TODAY of all days *L* and in Scotland, no less! But he'll be home the first week of April and that's all that matters to me.

Did you get a chance to bake those shamrock cookies? You can bring them out anytime...LOL...

Well as you may recall in the book and movie, my alter ego said, after the Yankees had ravished and destroyed the South, that "As God is my witness, me nor any of my kin will ever go hungry again". And since no one was more Irish than Katie Scarlett O'Hara, and since everyone is Irish on St. Pat's Day, that makes everyone my kin. So I must feed you all...Are you following?....

Right after this scene is where Scarlett said above. Rhett had just dumped her off on the road to Tara in the middle of the War.
