Unfortunately, history has proven there wasn't much of a downside for Israel in attacking the U.S.S. Liberty. The Israelis only called off the attack after it became clear the U.S.S. Liberty's radio operator had sent off a message identifying the ship's attackers as Israeli.
And after American planes were FINALLY( after several urgent requests) dispatched from a carrier in the MED

Two F-4s from either VF-102 or 33 were launched. That was all. There was never any large strike. The USS Little Rock and a can were standing by the Liberty the next day when we arrived to take off the dead and wounded. I still remember all the body bags lined up on the flight deck. During this evolution two F-4s were kept airborne to provide CAP. Then we left leaving the can,Little Rock and the Liberty.
