Tonight on the History Channel - 8-9 pm est.
Cover Up: Attack on the U.S.S. Liberty |
|
On June 8, 1967, the intelligence ship U.S.S. Liberty, stationed off the Sinai Peninsula during the Six-Day War, was attacked by unmarked jets and later by unmarked torpedo boats. In all, 34 men were killed and 171 wounded. Deep into the attack, the captain and crew realized that the aggressor was their ally, Israel, who claimed they couldn't identify the ship as American. We examine crewmembers' contentions that the attack was intentional and that both governments covered up the true details. TV PG |

The timing of this intentional...I like the History channle but if you watch...they are slanted way left...This sucks...WHY NOW?
To: RCW2001
This isn't the first time I've heard this story, nor is it the first time I've heard rumours about the attacks being deliberate. I've never understood, however, why they would be - why would Israel attack its biggest supporter, especially when that supporter could crush it in a day?

In 1967, the US was not the large supporter of Israel that it became later.
To: RCW2001
How can this be a "coverup" when it is posted and discussed all the time?
To: Rightwing Canuck
The USS Liberty was providing intel to Egypt that Israel had fighters in the air with tactical nuclear weapons. Thats why they were attacked.
I served with an RM1 in the Navy years and years ago.

It's no "coverup" in notoriety, but behind it. Both sides cannot admit they screwed up, that they were incompetent in whole or in part. In turn, both sides claim rectitutde and that they were following proper procedures. I've seen some interviews on this topic, and eveyone acts like they acted perfectly. Of course, the motivation is to avoid liability and embarassment. This struck me as more likely explanation of the incident than the others. The denials of lack of competence fuel "conspiracy" theories, whereby the theorizers typically mention things like "this could not be a mistake because x denied such and such." It's like the denials of aerial bombing mistakes in war. Everyone says the "program" was followed.

I never heard that one before. Not doubting it out of hand, but why would Israel have such weapons on fighters? They were winning that war from day one.

He probably put the wrong address on the aid package or the post office screwed up. Everyone knows Nixon was an antisemite. Been stories for a week about him and Billy Graham knocking Jews.

Viewers Guide to the History Channels Cover Up: Attack on the USS Liberty'Since the attack certain crewmen of the Liberty have charged that Israel deliberately and knowingly attacked the US ship, and have advanced increasingly complicated and even bizarre theories to explain Israels alleged motivation for such an act. In addition, author James Bamford has cited similar baseless theories in his two books on the National Security Agency the actual intelligence gathering by the Liberty was the responsibility of personnel from the NSA.'
-SNIP-'Many of the Liberty crewmen interviewed by the History Channel have in the past routinely charged and will presumably charge in the program that the US government, especially the Congress, has failed to investigate the attack on the Liberty because of supposed Jewish political power.
In fact, contrary to these claims, there have been at least six government investigations which reached relevant conclusions as to the intent and state of knowledge of the Israeli attackers and commanders. Those investigations, and their results, are as follows..'

I've never understood, however, why they would be - why would Israel attack its biggest supporter, especially when that supporter could crush it in a day? Unfortunately, history has proven there wasn't much of a downside for Israel in attacking the U.S.S. Liberty. The Israelis only called off the attack after it became clear the U.S.S. Liberty's radio operator had sent off a message identifying the ship's attackers as Israeli.

But, this can't POSSIBLY be about a cover-up! The State of Israel said it was an accident! The Johnson Administration--one of the most benevolent in history--believed them!
Can't be a cover-up! Just as the Israel sycophants who flock here!

Tom Clancy in his book The Sum of All Fears:
The key to it, Qati knew, was whether or not the
Americans would put real pressure on the Zionists.
They'd never done so. They'd allowed the Israelis
to attack an American warship and kill American
sailors--and forgiven them before the bleeding
had stopped, before the last victim had died. When
American military forces had to fight for every
dollar of funds from their own Congress, the same
spineless body of political whores fell over itself
giving arms to the Jews.
