His record is fine, but the fact remains that when he took over the RSC, the reps had a 55-45 majority and all signs suggested that Republicans would pick up more in 98. It was 50-50 after 2000 when he stepped down. McConnell could do nothing about Coverdell dying and having his seat filled by Miller. The other seats- plus all the missed opportunities to take over Dem seats- do fall squarely on him. As good of a conservative as he has been- that is how lousy of a RSC chariman he was- and Pickering has payed dearly for McConnell's impotence. There is no getting around that.

As good of a conservative as he has been- that is how lousy of a RSC chariman he was...Fair enough. McConnell was at the wheel when Repubicans lost the Senate. Even considering all factors, that's not a success, but a failure.
