The United States Postal Service has decided to honor the three New York City firefighters depicted in the famous photo "Flag Raising at Ground Zero" with a special stamp commemorating their efforts in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

The stamp was unveiled at a White House ceremony Monday afternoon, with the White House press office announcing:

"The design of the stamp is the photograph of three firefighters raising the American flag over the rubble of the World Trade Center. It is the first postage stamp to depict individuals that are still living. The stamp will be available next month in 38, 000 post offices nationwide ."

I just heard that it will be a 45 cent stamp....8 cents going to charity.

The first class rate is going up to 37 cents in July.

They should not have used that photo -- the rule against depicting living people is a good one (and an old one), and shouldn't have been thrown out the window, 9/11 or no 9/11.
