I think there could be alot of luck involved. I hit a deer once while driving a geo metro. The deer had just leaped and struck the hood of my car while in mid air. The impact shot the deer straight up and over the roof of my car. There was only a few small cracks as the base of the windshield and a few hairs stuck to the windshield wipers. There was less VISIBLE damage to my geo metro than to your pickup. It looked just like a very large man(a giant maybe) sat on the hood. But about 3 weeks later, the geo metro died on the road due to a combination of oil and water leaks that led to a seized engine. I was so glad that it seized BEFORE getting the bodywork repaired. I don't know if I was lucky or not, for being uninjured, but just to be sure, my next vehicle was a pickup.

The guy that towed me told me a story of somebody who hit an elk. Nobody was injured, but the story is quite... interesting. The man was driving a Ford car, a thunderbird, I think, but I don't remember for certain. He also had a sleeping passenger in the passenger seat. When they hit the elk, the elk went over the car, except for the head. The head went through the windshield, severed, and landed on the lap of the sleeping passenger. And so the passenger wakes up, blood everywhere, and an elk head in his lap. I think that's one person who will never again be able to fall asleep in a car!
