Gen. Mackenzie is occasionally on TV here in Canada talking about his career as a peacekeeper in various parts of the world. In Bosnia he was taking his orders from the UN and he tells how it was no good to contact the UN in NY to ask how to proceed after 4PM on Friday or before mid-morning on Monday: everybody at UN HQ was off work for the weekend. More than once he and his forces endured a weekend of fire and shelling (not continuous, to be fair) before they could get permission to return fire on Monday.
