I don't like guns much, but I love enthusiasts - just as I'm a digital photography enthusiast and digital video enthusiast, there are people who are gun enthusiasts.

So even though I'm a bit wimpy as a man, and cheerfully acknowledge that fact, I don't want to ban guns. I have a gun enthusiast friend who once asked me to participate in a little friendly target shooting. I was actually starting to get into it, when the last gun I tried tore off a healthy bit of skin from the recoil because I was holding it wrong. OUCH! Shows I'm no macho gun guy.

Funny thing was that he was using my $4,000 video camera at the time, so I have some ultra-clear footage of me in deep pain. I winced every time I viewed it.

Perhaps the key to this is that I acknowledge that I'm not a macho gun guy, and I'm comfortable with what I am in that regard. But I have respect for macho gun guys, and can be friends with them, unlike the people cited in this article.

PS I love high-density urban areas because they make for great restaurants.

I might suggest that the incident you describe merely shows that you were inproperly instructed on the correct grip for the gun you were firing. Somewhat similar to the video tape I once shot with the lens cap on. That was, however, the only vidoe I shot with the lens cap on. I do admit to several photos with the camera strap and or a finger in front of the lens and several photos taken with no film in the camera. I have since learned a whole lot more about taking pictures.

If you were getting into it I would encourage you to try it again as you may just really enjoy it.

You are consistent, I'll give you that.

I have a gun enthusiast friend who once asked me to participate in a little friendly target shooting. I was actually starting to get into it, when the last gun I tried tore off a healthy bit of skin from the recoil because I was holding it wrong.

You see, this puts the lie to your claim of wimpdom. You actually were getting into it. Then you got hurt due to a faulty technique. Could be you weren't instructed in the proper grip. Could be you just did it wrong that one time. But you were getting a certain amount of enjoyment out of it.

Some food for thought: Take a good training course in fundamentals. If you would care to email me privately, I would be happy to provide you with some organizations that do a very good job at this. Then go out to the range again. I'll bet you just love it. And then you'll be hooked. And I'll bet you dinner on this at the San Fernando Valley eatery of your choice if this isn't so.

Perhaps the key to this is that I acknowledge that I'm not a macho gun guy.

Maybe so. But I think if you'll look a little deeper, you'll discover a certain amount of machismo built in. It just comes with all that testosterone.

PS I love high-density urban areas because they make for great restaurants.

Can't hardly argue with you there. Although us suburban types have made some great strides in this area in recent years. -:)

Bro, don't sweat it. Did you have fun shooting or not? You can correct your grip, and that unfortunate scrape/cut won't happen again. If you enjoyed that day's shooting, by all means, welcome aboard...good to have you as a fellow gun guy.

I love taking novices to the range and watching their frowns of uncertainty and trepidation turn to smiles of enjoyment and accomplishment. I had a girlfriend once who supported the 2d Amendment, but "didn't trust guns". I talked her into going to the range with me one day, where I introduced her the .45, the 9mm, and the .357 revolver. I created a monster! She was a natural, and by day's end she was even outshooting me with the .357 Rossi. Much of folks' distrust and lack of understanding of firearms could be fixed with a simple day at the range.
