I'm with the name change in this case. The name can be used as an obvious racial slur, it's easily changed to the full name, and it hurts no one.

I distinguish between your garden variety PC decisions, and ones which are just thoughtful, and perhaps even kind.

btw, I'm a Cleveland Indians' fan who is against a name change there because the name was given to the team out of respect for one of its early players, and as a symbol of strength.

I agree with you. There is nothing racist in the term "Indian" and it is not used in an offensive manner.

"Coon" on the other hand, when used loosely, is an obvious racial slur and should be replaced by Raccoon. This is not catering to political correctness, its eliminating a blatant racist term.

Coon Hound is the recognized name of several brreds of American hunting dogs used on Raccoons, bears, cougars, wild boar and four-footed game. Generally preceeded by Black and Tan, Redbone, Plott, Treeing Walker, etc. Not likely to be confused with a racial slur.

Bingo! Louis Sockalexis bump!

And thank goodness, as well. "Cleveland Indians" (although I think "Cleveland Iroquois" is cool) sounds quite a bit better than the "Cleveland Spiders," no? ;-)
