I frequently defend MS, but there are som screwy defaults in XP. I tried to set up home networking on my sister's machine. It defaulted to having the built-in firewall enabled, which in turn defaulted to blocking file sharing. Some defults.
I have nothing personal against Microsoft either, but they should not be so paranoiac. All the people I know are naturally not inclined to pirate software. But with the advent of XP hackers seem to try to pirate it for the sheer thrill of it, to outsmart Bill G.
Windows XP being a more user-friendly upgrade of Windows 2000 had a great potential that was terribly wasted thru MSs paranoia IMHO. I thought last year Windows Whistler would have given a huge market boost for dual-processor home PCs. Being such an offensively defensive spy-turkey as XP is it doesnt stand a chance.
