Just about cried when he left us. He sure could tell a tale.
I particularly remember him telling the story of Jeff Davis Milton, who Skeeter thought was maybe the greatest lawman of them all. I had never heard of Milton, despite the fact that he was born and raised not far from where I was in the Florida Panhandle.
I once had some dealings with an FBI agent. Can't tell the story because of privacy act but he was a real piece of work. In fact he was not just an agent but a supervisor. I recall thinking the same thing as you. J. Edgar Hoover would never have put up with that guy.
I might also add that one of my best friend's Sister was a secretary with the FBI. We went to Washington D.C. to visit her and her two room-mates. A couple of FBI agents came by their apartment while we were there and they struck me as a couple of real sleazeballs. They were smart sleazeballs tho.
