The so called open door led everyone to assume the killer came in and got the sleeping girl at least after 3:30 AM. When all went to bed. Why would Westerfield, a neighbor, do this? BVD went to that bar with the intent of seeing DW. Damon had plenty of time to brood and make all kinds of mischief.
I'm assuming that DW's RV was parked out where it was accessible.
Let's see.........Dad at home with the kids while wifey-poo is at a bar with the neighbor. Hours tick by and mom's still gone (at the bar where the neighbor is). Opens up all sorts of possibilities, IMO.
