The problem is that all of the non-degreed examples you listed have exceptional talents. A few truly lucked in to their position.

Success involves more than ability and intelligence. It involves connections, luck and the perception of others. Many people are not even considered for jobs because they don't have a degree.

It may not be right, but it's true.

My father-in-law is the president of a large corporation. He never went to college. He started at the bottom, showed up early for work, left late, kept his eyes on the prize, worked hard and stayed honest. I believe that's the "trick." Work, focus and stick-to-it-iveness. A little bit of common sense goes a long way, too.
