March 4, 2002 -- ON ESPN's SportsCenter Saturday, Jay Bilas, reporting the departure of Nolan Richardson from the U. of Arkansas, called Richardson "a principled man." Hmmm. We could understand how Bilas might think, then report such a thing. Richardson, after all, often described himself as a man of superior social altruism. Especially when the heat was on. Perhaps that's what Bilas was talking about; perhaps, as do so many in his field, he took a notion and ran with it as a reality. The enduring image I have of Richardson's principles was formed on Feb. 4, 1990, Arkansas at Texas on ABC. Late in the game, with Richardson's team clearly headed for a loss, Arkansas was called for a foul. Richardson went theatrical. He stormed off the court and into the visitors' locker room. He quit the game and he quit on his team. A remarkable thing then occurred. Arkansas went on a furious rally to tie the game at the buzzer. When OT began, Richardson was back on the bench. Cheryl Miller, working that game for ABC, was equally remarkable in that she didn't pander to Richardson. Few are given more lookaway passes on TV than big-time college coaches. Miller said that as long as Richardson chose to abandon his team when they were losing, he should've stayed in the locker room.
