Good one! My thoughts exactly. And not without reason...
I worked with a Russian-American guy once who said the reason the king crabs in the Bering Sea are so big is because the Russians used to (still do??) flush the dead from the gulags down the ice floes of their Far Eastern rivers which carries the bodies out to sea. Down they go, food for the crabs. (Crabs eat like pigs, by the way.)
And also, I'm not sure, but I think Solzhenitsyn spoke of this in one of his Gulag books.
