[CATHOLICS: Anyone have additions to a list of Catholic films, playwrights, artists and fiction writers? I think this might be a good category to include.]

The Rectory reports two new resos already this morning. I want to fax out a copy of the agenda to a couple folks this afternoon. I'll appreciate a title and blurb for your mini-presentation.

Read most of Neocon's last night! We're in for a treat. I say we go full throttle, pray hard at Mass and lead off with The Math. Below's a mock agenda (I'm working on our logo and graphics for the ConSpiratio webpage) with some italicized bits reflecting how I (as emcee of sorts) shall be tying them together in general ... spin will become more specific once I read your pieces.

 9:30 am --     Arrival, set-up.

10:00 am --     Mass

10:30 am --     Coffee and croissants

10:45 am --     Introductions and an Overview of the Binders

AND ONTO THE TALKS ...

Beginning with the "math" ... and, in the process, sounding exactly the notes on which we debate most often with the Modernist (often atheist) Mind where human life, moral use of technology and the knowledge of God are concerned.

11:00 am --     On the False Dichotomy Between Science and Religion
An informal discussion of the philosophy of science and its place in the hierarchy of human knowledge with a view toward encouraging dialogue between religious and scientific thinkers. Particular emphasis is place on the apparent support to be found for certain distinctive ideas of Catholic theology in the cosmology of modern physics.

Bringing this to the practical level in two respects ... beginning with the use of technology in general (or its "compelling" us, rather =) ... also interested again in sounding the points you raised on imagination, ELS.

12:00 am --     [Technology and Middle Earth]
[abstract]

The old model of authority wherein the authority of Individuals was in direct proportion to their responsibility ... at every stage in the human hierarchy of the old City of Man. This sort of society likely recognizing the rank absurdity of technology's "compelling" anyone or the worship of the white-tipped cane that is Science.

12:30 am --     [Monarchy]
[abstract]

1:00 am --     LUNCH BREAK
Putting the conspiracy in ConSpiratio ...
1:45 pm --     [The Co-Opting of Faith for Political Purpose]
[Same stuff I repeat here on the forum ad infinitum only most of it will be in the book and I'll simply touch a a few key points -- clearly, concisely and stacked such that I've laid a foundation for our two more topics which bring into crystal clear focus the battlefront on which we are hunkered down as a rule ... ]

2:15 pm --     [Pius XII]
[Abstract]

3:00 pm --     Sexual Scandal in the Church
A discusson of sexual scandal in the Church with an emphasis on (1) AmChurch's inviting the State's secular authority to take precedence over Rome's and (2) the perpetual casting of celibacy as the crux of the crisis.

  4:00 pm --     Closing Prayers

As we will have begun the day with Mass and most of us will be attending at least one Mass the next day, I'm sure the priests will allow us some time for post mortem and plotting while we serve some Stilton and walnuts, havarti with praline pecan sauce, crackers, fruit and wine. We'll tidy up and make plans to reconnoiter on a balcony or in a courtyard somewhere for late supper after a couple hours' rest.

Fiction writers: by all means include Louisiana's own Walker Percy (buried at St. Joe's Abbey in Covington), as well as Evelyn Waugh (the greatest prose stylist of the 20 th C., who knew all about "the modern age in arms"), and Flannery O'Connor.

Abstract forthcoming, probably tomorrow. Following your act should be, um, an interesting challenge. Are you looking for entire paper (there won't be one -- not written), fleshed-out outline, or only a coupla graphs?

One I hadn't heard of (not that that is a significant measurement) is Andre Dubus.

Speaking of burning bushes, there's yet another property of fire, which I especially regret not having remembered, as it's the most important of all: that is its way of inducing change.

In this season of Lent, the repentence to which we're called is known more expressively in Greek as "metanoia" - a change of heart. We're reminded that we not only can change, but must change; that conversion is not a once-for-all experience, but a constant fixture of the Christian life; that the change to which we're called is Transfiguration -- the fruit of the Resurrection.

Flannery O'Connor reminds us that human nature's usual response to grace is resistance - sometimes a struggle of the soul even unto death - because grace induces change, and change is painful. However, notwithstanding the pain occasioned by change-inducing grace - itself sometimes not unlike fire - O'Connor makes the further point that you can't reject it without rejecting life.

"We will not be silent. We are your bad conscience. The White Rose will not leave you in peace!"
