Plot Summary for We Were Soldiers (2002)

In a place soon to be known as The Valley of Death, in a small clearing called landing zone X-Ray, Lt. Colonel Hal Moore (Mel Gibson) and 400 young fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons, all troopers from an elite American combat division, were surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. The ensuing battle was one of the most savage in U.S. history. We Were Soldiers Once...And Young is a tribute to the nobility of those men under fire, their common acts of uncommon valor, and their loyalty to and love for one another.

Wonder what's up? Hollywood growing a moral backbone? Or just following the money?

I think there's a little bit of everything in this stew. It seems that following the money has led Hollywood to begin to acquire something resembling a backbone, though it seems to be weak and vulnerable and could easily revert to spinelessness if the bucks dry up. Also, I do believe that the shift in values that is taking over, ever so gradually, as the baby boomers age and become the predominant market in the US, is affecting Hollywood. But bottom line, I think it's the money driving everything in Hollywood.

I came out from seeing this movie 3 hours ago. I am still shook up. Guys in my high school class went off to VietNam. I dated vets who had returned. Saw all the other movies, Apocalypse, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, etc. They are just movies compared to this. This was just an unbelievable film, and Moore a soldier who had unbelievable courage and love for his men. The story of the wives and those left behind added so much. God bless all our vets (my own dad WWII and hubby army vet) but most of all bless those who went there to fight that terrible war.
