I read this article as democrats in the GAO whining about being called on to do their job, as opposed to going on partisan fishing expeditions in violation of separation of powers. Their job is to look after government property (in part), rather than to determine who talked to whom when about energy policy. It looks like they have stepped into another Karl Rove trap. Even though they were trying to strike back at the bad press they have been getting for overreaching on Enron, they have reminded everyone that they were asleep at the switch on something that was more their responsibility.

dumb move if true. It looks petty and an attempt to shift the focus from Enron. Besides, they had their chance MONTHS ago. Yes, on a logical scale Enron's $70bil bankruptcy is 280,000 times bigger than the $250,000 vandalism charge. It would be like interfering with the $250,000 vandal charge to ask the GAO to investigate a $1.00 error in an expense report.
But we Conservatives are way too logical. This GAO request by Bush will require a full airing. It is more "news" than the old Enron story and will go a long way towards moving us past Enron to the next news cycle, whatever that is.
