I guess it's my American upbringing, but I can't help thinking anyone hanging on to royal title should be ashamed of themselves.

It is this upbringing that, thank G-d, makes this country so different from the rest of the world.

Yet, we should not assume that what is good for us is good for other people.

Among us, too, there are plenty of people who, depsite their "American upbringing" admire royalty. Not having one in this country they use the JFK familty and Hollywood as proxies.

Well from my American upbringing, although we are no longer under the rule of the Crown, I still respect the royalty and would send my condolences to the family.

Once long ago I had a job at a convention of bilingual educrats, helping get them registered.  I was busy typing and printing up the name-badges, and I can assure you they were all very particular (and not ashamed) about having their titles there on their badges.  Also, you don't have to read too far back in history about the royal folks to find out that quite often having a royal title was a royal pain in the _____ (fill in whatever area of the anatomy sounds right) not to mention dangerous for keeping the head attached to the neck.

I'm with you. The entire concept of "royalty" is a perverse corruption and should be stamped out at every opportunity.

I don't think being "royal" means be anything like it used to be. It appears to me being a royal is simply being a living icon or symbol of the state you are officially born into. Kinda like being a living, breathing Uncle Sam your entire life. It could be fun. And it could suck. You lead a sheltered and secure life but since you are a public symbol, your life will be scrutinzed at every turn. The public loves you and hates you at the same time. I don't think being a royal is as fun as it sounds. Plain, unassuming royals, I'm guessing, lead very pleasant, private lives that don't intrude on anyone else's. I'd take harmless, randy, and embarrassing royals over the grasping King and Queen Klintoon any day.
