If HE doesn't pick up the tab, it isn't a date. However, I might insist on paying my share if he's truly a jerk I never want to see again.

There have been times in my life when I was less than well-endowed in the financial department. Does that mean that I should have been deprived of female companionship? Yes. The taxpayer's do not need to support the product of your recreation. If you can't afford the results of dating, you are too immature to be mating. The government shouldn't be in the business of enabling you to be irresponsible.

A man and his money are soon parted, if they ever were acquainted in the first place.

I usually pay when my girlfriend and I go out and every so often she treats, which I appreciate greatly.
At the house I do the cooking and she does the diswashing. The other day she looked at me and said, "how come I always get the crap job"? I laughed so hard that I ended up doing the dishes that night!

...However, I might insist on paying my share if he's truly a jerk I never want to see again.... Perfect solution.
As for the 'I cook, she dishwashes': I can tell you right here and now that the minute women refused to behold the power of cooking over/for their men, they messed up the rules of the game irreparably. They should henceforth be prepared to change tires and take out the trash for the rest of their lives.

People grab checks because they want to show hospitality. Not because of any desire to control everybody in some patriarchal way.Exactly. It is a way to show that you appreciate their company and that you don't take it for granted. Not everything is about control.

It is the courteous and chivalrous thing to do. If on a DATE...

dating and mating is two different things. These days they're pretty close. Nature has gotten very sneaky about causing "accidents" in humans, for example hiding when a woman goes into heat, which is very different than all other female animals. The recent invention of the pill has really shaken things up and new rules and morals are being tested out. Still abortions are a very common and unfortunate thing. Society isn't ready yet to let immature males start mature relationships. If they can't afford the date, the female should still reject him. That may sound unfair, but life isn't fair.

Hell, I've got some friends that will engage in a lot of competition just to grab the check for a group - and you don't want to get in their way. LOL... Those are the best kind of friends to have too. No one likes a cheapskate.

I believe that traditionally, if a man invites a woman out for dinner, he should pay. Then if she wishes to reciprocate, she will invite him over to dinner, and cook.
But times change, and circumstances do require a little flexibility. I have been taken out to dinner and drinks by a woman, and she paid for everything (after I spent the better part of a Saturday replacing the timing belt in her car).

If I ask a girl out, and she insists on paying her own tab, I take it as an insult and won't ask her out again.

When I was dating, my women insisted on paying everything. I think they looked at it as just part of the stud fee. Yes, those were the days.
