Vanity Post on Vanity Posts, Duplicate Posts, Trash Posts, Commie Propaganda, etc., Vol V, No. 1
Free Republic ^ | 1/25/02 | Jim Robinson

Way too many vanity threads lately. And way too much trash being posted. Please try to stay on topic (politics). Also, please do a search on a significant word from the title of your article before posting. This will reduce the number of duplicates. And, along these same lines, please use the original titles on your article posts. Do NOT edit the titles. Do NOT use "My Title" titles. This will also help to reduce the number of duplicates.

And, whatever else you do, please DO NOT post from DEMOCRATS UNDERGROUND (or any other such trashy un-American socialist hangout). Free Republic was intended to be a socialist free zone. We've gone to a heck of a lot of trouble to make it that way. Why in the world would you think we would be interested in having their trash posted here?

And QUIT trashing each other. You know who you are. Knock it off! Way too many flamewars and feuds going on. And, while I'm thinking about it, QUIT trashing our conservative candidates. If you want to criticize someone's position on some policy, have at it. But do not trash or smear the man. That would include Browne, Buchanan, Bush, Keyes, et al, or whomever else may be your favorite trashee (examples listed in alphabetical sequence). The idea is to get more conservatives elected, not to trash the ones you don't like. If you want to trash someone, make it a Democrat. Thank you.

And QUIT dredging up old communist propaganda to smear our conservatives. Sheesh! Whatever else you may think about our guys, they did not hijack airliners full of people and crash them into buildings. No, my friends, not even the dreaded CIA. Anyone who would believe (or even suspect) that crap is no FReeper. I've been pulling this crap whenever I see it and several people have been banned for continuing to post it. I do not want it on Free Republic. Any current FR poster who believes this leftist propaganda, please logoff immediately, send me your resignation via email, and I will delete your account.

Thanks,

Jim

Please try to stay on topic (politics).

Perhaps you can help me with a question on this part of JimRob's post. I asked him last night, but I guess that he is pretty busy now. There are topics on FR such as 'Culture', which are not strictly politics, by usual definitions. Is the meaning of the post that the 'Culture' topics are to be eliminated, or that posts in that area, on religion, literature, motion pictures, etc. should concentrate on the relationship of this aspect of our culture to political/philosophical principles.

To pick a topic which was recently very hot, but now has slacked off, is a LOTR thread talking about the relationship between Tolkien's vision and the ideas of justice and virtue underlying American society OK, but threads concentrating on things like the attractiveness of Burger King LOTR memorabilia is not OK?

This is how I search. I use the new 'search' engine located next to the 'self-search' feature at the top and bottom of the threads. It is also located on the post article page at the top.

Do not use the entire title, pick one or two key words from the title. Use one word if the topic is not too hot, or 2 words for hot topics to narrow your search. If you want two or more words included in your search, select 'match all words'. For example, if you are searching for an Enron thread titled, "Enron gave 5 million dollars to the Democrats", use 'Enron' and 'Democrats'.

The limitation on this search engine is it will not find 3 or less character words, ie, ABC, God, FOX, NRA, etc. I like to use the 'order by post time' feature to chronogolically locate threads.

Try finding this thread using these key words, then bookmark for future reference:

First seach using 'engine'

Second, search using 'Experimental ' and 'search'

Pass this this along to your friends.

I would agree with your LOTR example. The same for humor, the intent of humor was for political humor. If you apply that rule to your posts, you should be ok.

When I jumped all over the guy for breaking at least one major rule, he smugly told me "tough, I'll post what I think needs to be seen."

Same thing happened to me in December or November, somebody posted a story from a week earlier in 'Breaking News', because they felt that the subject warranted more attention. When I pointed out his error, he basically gave me the answer your guy did. Not only that, but a number of other posters basically told me to MYOB, as if the care and well being of the forum was not the business of all Freepers.

I actually know about these things.

Neat Goldfish, Saber! Do you also do freshwater, or saltwater tropical fish?

And as a journalist (albeit in a different country),

Beautiful place, Ireland. But the politics in recent decades seem to have been going downhill at least as fast as the economy has been going uphill.

Thanks. I've done just about everything with fish.

It is impossible to catch every duplicate thread or attack post. If you point out to someone a thread has been posted, let us know. If you are being attacked for this, let us know. I know many of you hate to 'snitch' on fellow posters. Your abuse reports are anonymous to us. Only Jim knows who makes those reports. We will keep duplicate up if they are posted more than a couple hours apart, unless it's still in breaking news.

I would agree with your LOTR example.

Thank you for confirming what I thought about this. I know that Jim (at least when I've noticed) has not been particularly thrilled by culture threads, and I want to keep him happy (having given him reasons in the past not to be, but I have tried to lower the flame quotient lately). I guess the LOTR threads got a bit out of hand around a month or two ago, but I first posted on this subject a year ago, because of the story's call for the idealism which was so absent during the regime of X-42.

What I've noticed is that there is a general ignorance about the purpose and function of FR. People look at it as a "bulletin board," like one of those fly-by-night UltraBoard thingies, or YahooGroups, or something. They think it's about "free speech," when it's about "free ideas" (the two are not the same).

I don't believe Jim has a problem with 'culture' threads when it has a political topic. Smoking is a political (taxes) and a cultural topic. It's the trashy, on the verge of porn type threads that are bringing down the forum. Jim's vision was a political forum where like minded conservatives could fight political corruption. Not how long someone's tongue is, how to make stew, britney's breasts etc.

I did at the time, but I think that a big software or hardware upgrade was going on, and you folks were just too busy. Last time I checked was a couple of days later, and it was still there. Didn't check later, since the search engine was not working. I guess I could use the new search engine or google to try and find it, but unless you're interested in ancient history, I'll leave it alone. There seems to be enough current stuff to keep us all busy, beyond just regular Freeping. Will inform you again if it happens again.

Where to you get this, that Mr. Robinson "has not been particularly thrilled by culture threads"? There is a topic category called "Culture/Society" that is specifically for "discussion of health, education, welfare, drugs, abortion, environment, housing, unions, employment, social security, religion, arts, humanity, sports, and other cultural and societal issues."

Perhaps he is not partial to this topic--who knows?--but he and the rest of the "management staff" are famously hands-off concerning anything but rules violations.

Smoking is a political (taxes) and a cultural topic.

I would guess that literature and history might be included too, at least if it touches cultural or political values (as you can see, I am a bit of a student of Roman history, especially as of the time of the fall of the republic, which seems to have an unhappily large number of lessons for us now (see my homepage).

That has been done and "approved" in the FR Daily Humor/Bizzare News Thread 1/31/02 Is anyone entering the other humorous vanity threads posted today and recommending that the information be re-posted there for those that don't get it?....

Well back when the LOTR frenzy was at its peak, in the middle of December, he made some remarks (possibly joking) to the effect that he was tired of seeing them. I know he has been tolerant, and was just checking to see that nothing was changing in this area. As you can see by my post, I referred to the 'culture' topic, and was looking to see if that was going to go away. (I didn't think so, but it never hurts to check, right).

As I said earlier in this thread 'I guess the LOTR threads got a bit out of hand around a month or two ago'. Actually many of the best LOTR threads were posted well before December 10, 2001, which was your limit.

I do think that we have barely scratched the surface on LOTR, wait till the DVD this spring, and The Two Towers at Christmas, and Return of the King a year later. Not to mention the 12 hours plus collector's edition of the three movies, sometime in 2003. LOL! More seriously, I posted in one or two of the threads, urging that the strictly fannish stuff belonged on one of the many LOTR sites, leaving only the stuff of arguable cultural influence on FR!
