Meet The New Left: the Republican Party
harryroolaart.com ^ | Wednesday 30 January | Harry Roolaart

Posted on 01/30/2002 11:38:51 AM PST by frednorman

In his State of the Union Address President Bush called on all Americans to serve their nation for the equivalent of two years (4,000 hours) over their lifetimes, and announced a major new citizen service initiative - the USA Freedom Corps. Thinly disguised as "taking responsibility" within our war on terrorism, the new "Freedom Corps" and its terror counterpart "The New Citizen Corps" are perhaps the most alarming elements to stem from government in decades. We expect such programs to emanate from the left, as Americorps did during the Clinton years, but what is particularly alarming in this case is the fact that these new initiatives were announced by George W. Bush, a Republican.

I see, so it's not a Conservative position to want to help out your community by volunteering, instead of having the gov. take your money to do it?

It is good to encourage people to do community service. Can't find any fault with that.

What the hell are you talking about?

Errr... and the problem with volunteer work is???? What?

I'll tell you something, as someone who has already given 3 years of his life in volunteer work with inner city youths. I find it to be the conservatives who actually put their money where their mouth is. When it comes to wanting to make a change and help people.

So now volunteering is "statism"? Boy, the loonies on the right and the loonies on the left are really imploding all over each other. This is extreme fun. I hope Uncle Bill pukes up another anti-Bush/BCCI/arab conspiracy thread from the 90's...those are hilarious.

I agree, some of our most upstanding citizens have done community service: Tanya Harding, Robert Downy Jr., Paula Pounstone, Christian Slater, etc.etc. Hey, it didnt hurt them.

President Bush said something important last night. He said that after 9/11 we looked in the mirror, and we saw a better side of ourselves. No more of this Clinton motto: "If it feels good do it". President Bush is saying "Let's roll"!!

The man has returned dignity to the WH. He has made me proud to be an American again. Only an exceptionally cold-hearted person would call it *statistism* to want to be that better person in the mirror. I say "Let's roll"!!

Here, here. I know many libs and they are usually too busy giving time and money to Sierra Club, Hand Gun Control, Human Rights Campaign, Greenpeace, PETA, etc. They consider that to be service to their "community."

Really. Until I see jack-booted thugs at my door 'requesting' I serve, crap like this can piss-off. This must also mean the millions who have already volunteered are nothing more than nazi clones. The basatards. /sarcasm

Y'all do realize, don't you, that this "Freedom Corps" won't be free? That it will cost money? That it will be run by the same govt that can't deliver our mail properly?

Why should we respond to the utter failure of Americorps by putting more money into it? Has Clintonism become the new model for the GOP?

It's all run by volunteers. And yes the gov oversees it. Who would you like overseeing citizens who are engaging in POLICING activities such as writing parking tickets, or directing traffic?

Does it make one a bad American to believe that

Whats worth doing is worth doing for money?

ALSO

Does it count if you "volunteer your time" helping your child, or parents, or yourself?
