KOGO AM 600 talk show host Roger Hedgecock has just broken the story that the INS has arrested ten illegal aliens (he gave the nationalities, but I can't recall any other than Honduras) at the Point Loma nuclear submarine base in San Diego. The aliens were employed by a contractor and were engaged in the sandblasting and painting of a nuclear submarine! 5 of the aliens had obtained base clearances, and 5 had not. Some aliens fled at the approach of the INS, causing the lockdown of the base. 2 were later apprehended when their hiding place was located. When the INS refused to comment, the KOGO news staff requested the name of the FBI agent in charge of Homeland Security for the San Diego area. They were told that there was none.
The first order of business in getting the illegals out is verifying who is and who isn't an illegal alien. Notice that a lot of folks say "THEY have to prove they're here legally, I don't." On what basis do they say that?
1st, the drydock where the subs are taken is away from the base & tender(s) just inside the bay on Pt. Loma.
2nd, there is an FBI building here in SD that is responsible for home security, etc., close to the stadium, but it's always been public policy that they don't disclose its location in direct press like that.
Here is additional information on this story from the Hedgecock Show:
Origins of aliens: 8 Mexico 1 Phillipines, 1 Honduras. The story has been confirmed by the INS and Border Patrol.
Someone named Jan Caldwell of the FBI returned a phone call from KOGO. She said the case is the INS's, "It's their venue. I't not the FBI's job. KOGO is blowing the story out of proportion." KOGO has a call in now to Tom Ridge, Director of Homeland Security. They plan to inform him of the breach, if he's hasn't been told, that the FBI isn't interested, and that the FBI claims not to have an agent assigned to Homeland Security for San Diego.
Poohbah is full of baloney. He is playing political chicken scare tatics like most liberals do. They claim the only way to protect our borders and keep illegal aliens out is to have a national ID card and have more of our freedoms taken away. Hogwash!
The borders can be protected much better, INS can be beefed up and the US an do a hell of a lot better job keeping out the illegal aliens without the socialist solution of a national ID card.
Of course their alternative to a national ID card is just let the illegal aliens in to vote for their phoney world government socialist candidates like Al Bore who will then give us a national ID card!!!!
They never want to better enforce the laws we already have, they just want to give us more laws to take more freedoms and our guns away.
IMO the draconian part comes in sentencing of offenders. Anyone caught employing illegals would pay a hefty fine the first time, the second time said employer goes to jail. Anyone caught fabricating ID's gets the chair.
Problem solved!

Yes, you are: the sheer amount of data that "backstops" this data. Part of the work is simply collating all of the information on each person into one pile.
Part of the process--and it would be a multistep one--would be a Social Security number check. A bogus SSN is enough to get you an extended stay at a Graybar Resort while everything else gets microscopically checked, subsequently to be deported to your native land. Also, the amount of data currently available on each of us LEGITIMATE residents of America, if it were collated into one usable file, would make identity theft a real challenge--not impossible, but a lot harder than you're describing. Among other things, assuming someone managed to steal a valid Social Security Number, cross-checking through the other data tracks would reveal the fraud pretty quickly.
