JUSTICE COVERS 'NUDE' STATUES
DRUDGE ^ | 01/28/02

Fed up with having his picture taken during events in the Justice Department's Great Hall in front of semi-nude statues, Attorney General John Ashcroft has reportedly ordered massive draperies to conceal the offending figures -- which have been displayed since the 1930s!

The draperies were installed last week at a cost of just over $8,000, reports ABCNEWS.com's Beverley Lumpkin.

At the center of the controversy: two enormous and stylized but largely naked aluminum statues.

The female figure represents the Spirit of Justice; the male on the right is the Majesty of Justice. The male is clad in only a cloth draped over his essential parts; the female wears a sort of toga-style garment, but one breast is entirely exposed.

Last November, during a press conference announcing new challenges of fighting terrorism, Ashcroft was photographed with the naked breast right over his shoulder!

The snap ran in major papers.

Still, my point is, as stated above, I do not understand the mentality of someone who goes through all the work and trouble of creating a statue, and then deliberately decides to make it naked. Why?

I often ask the same thing of God almighty, but alas, he never responds.

OK, nice and slow for mongo....I would have no problem with that picture if I were AG, it would not bother me, I would be more concerned with doing my job than worrying about a statue. I'll give you the even simpler version: It would not bother me. I'll give you the caveman version: Me not bothered by fleshy thing on woman idol!

Candygram(for lurkers you have to see the movie "Blazing Saddles" to understand the joke)!

CS that is so easy for you to say and criticize, you are an armchair quarterback. You may think and call Ashcroft an "authoritarian", but I am proud of him for taking on the liberal media and that he is not going to be defined by them.

"We went to Rome for 10 days on our second date, with one day out to Florence..... :o)"

ROME???? It's clear I don't know how to date. I think a movie and a pizza is a big deal.

Falling in love with the prettiest woman in the world in Rome, the most romantic city in the world, definitely was something I was not expecting to happen in my life. Too much like a movie! I had to pinch myself; it was an amazing experience. I think it was the most amazing experience of my life.

Uh, except maybe for when I go to St. Thomas and marry her on the beach with our families present that we shipped down and rented villas for. :o) In about four months, too....

Like I said bro: Love LOTTO! She is the best woman I have ever met, much less gotten lucky enough to date, much less fallen in love with me and vice versa, much less married.... Sometimes it really does work out pretty damned cool! :o)

I cannot believe you think the first exposure kids should have to nudity should be from 'sneaking a peek' at a nudie mag, as opposed to viewing great Art. Your priorities seem a little odd.

Well, I was just making a little joke there, but in all honesty, at least by the time a kid sneaks their first peek at a dirty mag, it is an indicator that they are maturing and becoming curious. However, my wife (the art lover in the family) has taken me to some exhibits where there was some pretty filthy stuff on display, and people were literally walking around with 1-7yr olds. I found that disturbing.

Pal, you've got some major issues. I guess I can consider myself lucky that I wasn't permanently scarred from visiting the Louvre with my family when I was 10.

Yeah right, attribute everything to psycological problems and emotional scarring. LOL!!! That is such a leftist tactic. In fact, it is right out of the list of Communist goals.

You might wanna change your name from "Southern Rock" to "Southern Dork".

Too funy. 99.9% of all art is overrated anyway. I don't know why it is such a cult. Ohhhhh!! Art!! Ahhhhhh!! Gimme a break.

Well, you can disagree with me if you want - but I think you missed the point I was trying to make. The statue is not a problem for me - I would walk into any museum and look at nude statues and it would not bother me. I don't even have a problem with it being where it is at the front of the Justice Dept.

However, this particular statue was BEING USED to embarass Ashcroft. The way it was being used was, the photographer would position a picture of Ashcroft exactly where the uncovered breast would end up in the picture next to Ashcroft's face. As a Christian, and I might add very Godly man, that was very embarassing. But, our wonderful media were using it much too frequently. That was their big mistake. Ashcroft soon realized they were using that statue everytime he made a speech in that room. Ashcroft got tired of it and decided to call their bluff! The media are the ones who made a big deal out of it - and they got caught!

But ... no real journalist/photographer would have allowed such a picture to ever make it to the public arena. The fact that the picture was allowed - tells me everything I want to know about the photographer and the print media who went ahead and printed it.

"Is that what I want"??

What I "want" if for Ashcroft to succeed. The press hates him for refusing to hide his Christian faith. An issue like this will be used to ridicule Ashcroft - I can just imagine the editorial cartoons and SNL sketchs. It's a stupid non-issue that will not be debated rationally, but only for maximum political benefit.

"defined"

I would hardly call manipulating pictures of Ashcroft with a nude - defining him. I would rather call it exactly what it is - ridicule.

Working for an airline is a great way to date..."wanna go catch lunch?" "Sure...where?" how about San Fran?"

Well,no doubt about it. Going to Rome is a LOT nicer than going for the special at Burger King. Then again,I honestly don't think I've ever had anything taste better than a Big Mac at the Moscow McDonalds.

Some of us have learned that "nakedness" is a shame

Do more ab crunches.

Ah, the shame of joy and the joy of shame.

Ashcroft is tired of not measuring up to the statues in the bedroom. The "Shrinkage" defense was wearing pretty thin with Mrs. Ashcroft.
