I recently talked with some Greenie friends. (Although I don't agree with them, some are actually friends.) While I'd agree with you that they tend to be misguided, I think most would be just as averse to dictators, cults and such as you or I.
They tend to believe that non-violence is the only option. Some of them are pretty brainy folks, they just don't get that part about freedom being something to be defended. They don't get the part about both sides having to want non-violence in order for non-violence to work. I am sometimes amazed to find people who are smart enough to do calculus in their head, but can't figure out something as simple as defending freedom.

That is why intellectuals make horrible leaders.

Something I learned a long time ago - most engineers, even the best, can't add. Hard things are simple for them. Simple things are hard.

The Greens are brainy folks? That's frequently the case. Even more brainy was Josef Stalin. He was a brilliant man. However, he had some character defects. How many million was it he murdered? This is the man whose philosophy the Greens aspire to. This is the man the Greens admire. They can't do anything without trampling on the Constitution. The environment is just a means to an end. If you want to save the land just stop immigration and donate to Ducks Unlimited. For Pete's sake, Ducks Unlimited saved more wildlife habitat last year than the Green organizations have in their entire existence.
