With the passage of time, every day matters. The direction of events and the ultimate consequences of the pivotal transformation in America, cannot be clearer. Yes, the War on Terror, is changing the Nation more than the horror of those eight Clinton years. The prime fault lies not with the Bush administration, but rests with the American People. That is not to exclude the President or his appointees from allowing this frightful trend to take hold. So what is this threat to civilization and the national heritage? Well, it should be obvious, it is called Patriotism.
Now before you lynch the messenger, consider the nature of National Loyalty. We are told that Patriotism is love for one's country, which is valid. But in practice, the current version of devotion to country, is defined as blind faith and obedience to government policies. We are continuously told that at no other time has the American public been so united. But the reality is, never have they been more wrong. Wrong to support a false and destructive policy to police the world, American style. CLICK FOR FULL ARTICLE..
Losers?
Furthermore, the Administration has made no secret of its hope that the judiciary will accede to its broad reading of the USA PATRIOT Act just as pliantly as Congress acceded to its broad legislative agenda. In a letter sent to key Senators while Congress was deliberating over this legislation, Assistant Attorney General Daniel J. Bryant, of DOJ's Office of Legislative Affairs, openly advocated for a suspension of the Fourth Amendment's warrant requirement in investigating foreign national security threats.7 The Bryant letter brazenly declares:
As Commander-in-Chief, the President must be able to use whatever means necessary to prevent attacks upon the United States; this power, by implication, includes the authority to collect information necessary to its effective exercise.... The government's interest has changed from merely conducting foreign intelligence surveillance to counter intelligence operations by other nations, to one of preventing terrorist attacks against American citizens and property within the continental United States itself. The courts have observed that even the use of deadly force is reasonable under the Fourth Amendment if used in self-defense or to protect others.... Here, for Fourth Amendment purposes, the right to self-defense is not that of an individual, but that of the nation and its citizens.... If the government's heightened interest in self-defense justifies the use of deadly force, then it certainly would also justify warrantless searches.8
Assuming -- as wife of the Vice President -- she's privy to prevailing "opinion" and using same to form her public remarks, I see no reason we cut her some slack because she's some kind of "Junior Leaguer".
As a woman, I find that insulting.
Horowitz ended up schlepping handbills on Champs Elysee? Just checking. ;-)
Actually, Horowitz would be the first to admit he was a deluded fool in his radical youth. The difference is he discovered a vast disconnect between the real world and his preconceived ideology and changed his entire life as a result. It's doubtful that Jean-Paul Sartre even had such an insight, much less the moral courage to confront the lies he embraced.
I agree with you about Sartre. It's ironic that the term philosopher -- which means one who loves wisdom -- is used to describe an intellectually dishonest hypocrite like Sartre who wrote hundreds of pages of turgid, incomprehensible prose about literally nothing.
Horowitz is a witness in the Chambers-Muggeridge-Orwell-Solzhenitsyn tradition, i.e., someone who tells the truth about subjects the majority of men lie about. For example:
Why Israel Is The Victim And The Arabs Are The Indefensible Aggressors In the Middle East
Truth-tellers are rare, especially in times like these when "we have sunk to such a depth that restatement of the obvious is the first duty of public men," as Orwell said.
Summer is correct. If you follow the link that TLB gives, it's quite clear that he is stalking, harrassing, and maligning her.
on the staff of several politicians and in many campaigns. Is the author going to state which politicians, so that the body public can judge his motives?
Those of you who don't see the parallels between the current blind patriotism and what happened in Hitler's Germany obviously haven't read much about Hitler's Germany.Tell you what. We will see where we end up in 2-3 years, and see who looks like a fool. You or me.
AnarchismLots of anarchists making their case on FR lately. Bill White's ilk and the IAC's ilk either have found like minds or have decided to try their luck here directly.
