Grits Honored by Georgia Legislature

Monday, as the Legislature convened its 2002 session, Everett introduced House Bill 993, which would make grits the "official processed food" of Georgia, joining the azalea (state wildflower), the honeybee (state insect), the knobbed whelk (state seashell) and about 40 other state symbols. Pelote, a Savannah Democrat, joined as a co-sponsor, making the legislation bipartisan.

Everett said he added the word "processed" to the bill to appease the powerful peanut (state crop) and peach (state fruit) lobbies. Grits are made by milling and processing corn kernels.

Grits are great. The best way to eat grits:

Crumble up two or three pieces of bacon over a heap of grits. Fry up two or three eggs over easy in the grease from the bacon. Put the eggs on the grits and bacon. Mix them all up together. Salt and pepper to taste. Spread the mixture on buttered toast and enjoy.

Now that's good eatin'!

They're OK and supposed to be good for you but some people eat grit with tons of butter. Personally I do not like them because of their oatmeal like texture. They served grits everyday in the Marine Corps messhall.

In the end, it's simply cooked corn, but it doesn't look a bit like kernel corn. It's white -- sort of a mush or grainy pudding with a mild, pleasant corn flavor. Served with butter, ham gravy, cheese, onions or such. Quite pleasant.

Let's see, with ...
Chicken eggs the State egg.
Buttered toast the State toast.
Red-eye gravy the State gravy.

A wonderful breakfast officially fit for a wonderful state.
But their gonna have to make Virginia's Smithfield ham the State ham, sorry Georgia, that's just the way it is.

I've always felt kind of sorry for people that grew up in areas that don't have grits. Its really just ground corn that is boiled until it has an oatmeal or cream of wheat consistency. It's a great breakfast item that can be fixed a hundred different ways. The most traditional way is plain with just a pinch of salt (sometimes a pat of butter.)

I understand there is a ground corn item similar to grits that are also popular in Italy (don't know what it is called.)

I like grits with maple syrup on it, though I haven't seen many others eat them that way.

IMHO Grits fall under Chemical/Biological weapons and should be banned.

At least they are (allegedly) from Earth. Now, Brussels Sprouts...those are definitely alien!

all legislators are idiots.

The Dem. co-sponser is Dorothy Pelote. From the AJC:

Pelote made headlines last year when she told House colleagues that she had been "visited" by the spirit of missing intern Chandra Levy, making her the new darling of psychics throughout the United States.

A few years earlier, Pelote filed what became her signature legislation: a bill to keep grocery store sackers from licking their fingers to separate bags. "You keep your spit in your mouth, and I'll do the same," she said at the time. The bill didn't go anywhere. She's also sought bans on long fingernails for students, and bungee jumping.

I figure as long as they concetrate on things like grits they're not screwing up anything too serious.

No wonder the Marines are such a tough bunch. Grits are fuel for a lean, mean, fighting machine.
