Abuse Of Ping List
Free Republic Threads

It seems there is a sudden upswing in ping list. Please don't take me wrong I'm on a few of them and I enjoy them. However when a person starts recieving whole list pings to a same thread 4 times for that same thread then I consider that to be abuse.
Most of us in here if we want off a ping list do so by posting the request in the thread and the issue is then settled. The person may have many reasons for doing so like getting pings to topics they do not want to pinged to.
In the last couple of days it seems there has been someone who refuses to take a hint even after multiple request on threads asking for name removal from the ping list. Is the person not seeing them? No I really don't think so as this person when someone request to be put on the list replies on the thread they are added.
The ping list should be a one time per thread event. If not such as the case now three threads equals 12 pings to all on the list. I think it's clear to see the problem it creates. Self search becomes bogged down.
I have tried to resolve this issue without resorting to this post. I can not just ignore 12 plus pings a day to just three different threads all from one freeper doing the runaway pings. To all others and you know who you are this is in no way directed at you or your list in any way.

Billie and Snow Bunny can "Ping" me any time.

Was that like publishing an unlisted phone number list along with the instructions "Don't call these people"? Heheh.
Maybe JohnRob could put a "Do Not Disturb" sign option on the profile pages to discourage, or a "ping block" to truly STOP them. For a computer expert - not me for sure - it might not be hard to do.

Please keep me ON your "ping" list(s).
IMHO, it is better to wade through a dozen AVERAGE threads, than to miss one "FReeper CLASSIC."
Please PING ME! (I trust your judgment.)

These persons use ping list responsibily and aren't the one doing this. I don't want off any ping list but the one I requested on post #2.

Maybe JohnRob could put a "Do Not Disturb" sign option on the profile pages to discourage, or a "ping block" to truly STOP them.
I don't think a "ping block" would work too well in its current form since it is simply a message that says "ping", "bump", etc. It would be hard to filter those messages while retaining non-ping messages that just happen to have those words in them. And abusers could just say "Hey, you! Look at this!".
My suggestion, which would probably not involve too much modification to the software, would be to have a link on each story that says "Notify Others". It would accept a user list, and behind the scenes it would post a message to those users with a code of some sort that denotes a ping. When the thread is being displayed, it would automatically filter out any message with a "ping code". This would also make a ping block possible.
Just a suggestion, for any future bulletin board updates.

You have been around long enough to remember the ways of old.
What bothers me about todays "Ping List" is the fact that people troll you to a thread, so you comment. Afterwards, you feel you wasted your time. IOW, if you ping, have the curtesy of responding to what is posted by the trollie.
As far as your dilema with a certain individual, it is indeed abuse and shoul be dealt with.

It's not just a question of being on a Ping List.
It's who you are put next to, or who was thought of before you.
In certain circumstances, I'd be quite upset if certain people were pinged before I was, but in others I wouldn't.
I bet some people wish nothing else in the world than to be on a Free Republic ping list!
Whilst others just get pinged to be wound up.

To: ambrose
appreciate the ping, ambrose. please keep me on your list.
i also appreciate that you don't ping me before 4am... because it
gets the dogs barking, wakes up my wife, then she's cranky all day.
now, i don't ping all that many folks, and i respond to all freepmail,
but whoever left the dead raccoon in my mailbox has stepped over the line. ;-)

I don't have a ping list, but I do sometimes ping various people to threads I think they might find interesting. Each one of my "pings" which list various people are different and created only at that time.
