Abuse Of Ping List

It seems there is a sudden upswing in ping list. Please don't take me wrong I'm on a few of them and I enjoy them. However when a person starts recieving whole list pings to a same thread 4 times for that same thread then I consider that to be abuse.

Most of us in here if we want off a ping list do so by posting the request in the thread and the issue is then settled. The person may have many reasons for doing so like getting pings to topics they do not want to pinged to.

In the last couple of days it seems there has been someone who refuses to take a hint even after multiple request on threads asking for name removal from the ping list. Is the person not seeing them? No I really don't think so as this person when someone request to be put on the list replies on the thread they are added.

The ping list should be a one time per thread event. If not such as the case now three threads equals 12 pings to all on the list. I think it's clear to see the problem it creates. Self search becomes bogged down.

I have tried to resolve this issue without resorting to this post. I can not just ignore 12 plus pings a day to just three different threads all from one freeper doing the runaway pings. To all others and you know who you are this is in no way directed at you or your list in any way.

IMHO, it is better to wade through a dozen AVERAGE threads, than to miss one "FReeper CLASSIC."

Me too!! And!!... That would include DavidOsborne. I haven't had anything he has pinged me, be offensive.

WE can also send private freepmails to accomplish what this thread was for. I get the feeling, this was done to keep the pot stirred up. Cause you can JUST IGNORE FRIGGIN PINGS.. if you don't want to OPEN THEM!!

I'd have missed a ton of important (to me) issues, if people hadn't pinged me. There are times I just ignore them. I might be to busy,.. or the issue doesn't interest me. I don't think there is a "limit" on how many pings a person gets.

Please continue to ping me with your ping list unless it on a thread about ping lists. Under that circumstance, remove me from the ping list for only those threads about abuse of ping lists. In other words, ping me baby.

As long as we're griping here, one particularly obnoxious use of the ping list is when some darn fool who's behind in a one-on-one argument has to bring in backup via the Ping List. Usually, his backup people are just as dense and ignorant as he. When he's still losing the argument five threads and a thousand posts later, he resorts to the ABUSE button in a feeble attempt to stifle the debate.

The discussion on this thread is most interesting . But no one has mentioned the "Bump Register" which I think is a great way to keep informed on topic areas without everyone getting bogged down in "PING" lists.

John -- are you still going to be able to implement the automatic notification for people that sign up for particular topic areas?

I don't have a steadfast bumping list. I generally make a list off the latest post. If you don't want to read my threads because the truth is too scary for you than you can ignore them

What an A**hole
