Hmm. I never read the books. Isn't it odd that Tolkien created entire languages and gave such attention to minute details, but used a post-Gregorian calendar?

Not really. The calendar had to be at least somewhat similar to ours in order for readers to understand what was going on. He did make some changes in the calendar, but if he had made major changes like changing the names for the months, it would have confused readers.
