There are some Jones’s on my Grandpa’s side.

Great story! I can't recall very many situations like this when I was in Germany, 77-81. I wrote my parents an occasional letter, but never a phone call...not on a butterbar's salary.
To put it in perspective, one of my mom's cousins enlisted on 12/8/1941. A few months later, he called his mom from the SF shipyard...told her he was shipping out for parts unknown, may not hear from him for awhile.
Their next contact was sometime in 1944.
