Jacksonville TV report is wrong -- no press conference scheduled and they have withdrawn the report Stoops has accepted the job. Bad journalism as they withdrew the report after their sources turned out to be wrong!

Shanahan, Denver coach has also been reported as accepting the job by CNN/SI!

Bottom Line -- FL AD to be in Norman tomorrow according to ESPN, Stoops has not been offered the job formally, and he is still the Sooners head coach until tomorrow! They expect an answer tomorrow but then they expected one today!

Sports journalists in FL are looking like a bunch of rumor mongers starting with the fact they said Stoops was in FL Friday, Saturday, etc. and he has not been out of Norman except to tape his TV show! Mike Stoops said he expects his brother to speak to the press tomorrow -- Bob was out his house today! Mike has told all the press that Bob has not made up his mind yet and is torn. Mike said that he hopes the decision is made quickly so everyone can get some sleep! The above report is a consensus of all our OKC TV stations! Stay tuned!

Just my guess, but I'm guessing that U. Florida is gonna' give Stoops an offer
he can't refuse.
And that even OU fans could understand him accepting, even if they don't like it.

But, who knows? Maybe Stoops might get a sweetheart of a deal from OU and be
assured rock-star status like Switzer as long as he keep a decent record and beats
Texas and/or Nebraska.

If this keeps up much longer, I'm gonna' need some anti-anxiety meds!

Funny, I was in Knoxville last year and a friend of mine was walking out of the game by himself (had to scalp a ticket in enemy territory) and some drunk Vole (yes, Vole) spit on him. Real classy.

From the sound of your post you are a regular internet tough guy. Your type is a dime a dozen...

You don't like Spurrier picking on poor twenty year old Pey-ton? I guess it worked cause I don't recall him ever winning against us. I, much like our former coach Steve Spurrier could give a flying squirrels as- what people in Tennessee think about our program. The truth is that year after year you Voles made us the pinacle game of the season yet we continuted to whip you like our red headed step children.

Spurrier never got over the fact that Tennessee didn't recruit him.

Failed to recruit a Heisman trophy winner that lived an hour from Knoxville?

Wow that speaks volumes about the program. Even then ya'll were a bunch of maroons. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

I'm trying to convince myself that this isn't going to be the Gibbs era part II. Mike Stoops should be able to take over and be an effective coach and the OU program isn't on probation, but nevertheless, I'm having deja-vu. Hopefully Bob will turn them down and there won't be a serious offer to Bob for another ten years.

No. or any other player. I think it shows Spurrier to be less of a man. Not that that seems to matter to you.

I guess it worked cause I don't recall him ever winning against us. I, much like our former coach Steve Spurrier could give a flying squirrels as- what people in Tennessee think about our program.

which makes you less of a man IMO. So when I refer to Fla and Spurrier as classless, you don't disagree, you simply say class doesn't matter if you win. I rest my case.

The truth is that year after year you Voles made us the pinacle game of the season yet we continuted to whip you like our red headed step children.

Guess you missed that part about the last 4 years. I'll not go over it again. Won't even point out how a bad call kept us from winning 3 out of the 4.

If a fan at Tennessee spit on a visitor, I assure you that other fans put a stop to it. Everyone here isn't perfect, but we take pride in showing class as a program. Fla actually encouraged abusive behavior towards visitors, and seated them in areas where they could be hurt. It was bush league at best, dangerous at worst. Why UF thought it had to behave that way simply indicates their lack of a winning tradition. This has the potential to become a good rivalry, and even the Florida media acknowledged that.

BTW, I am not am internet "tough guy," just a guy who recognizes intellegent comments and, by contrast, drivel. The pro-Spurrier "I hate Tennessee" paranoia that shows up everytime a thread like this starts is the latter. Hopefully your new coach can act a little more like a grownup.

The most telling historical reference, to me, comes from college basketball in the Big 12.

Not a person in the world would have blamed Roy Williams for succeeding Dean Smith at UNC. Roy Williams declined and stayed with the legacy he's built at KU.

In my opinion, Stoops should stay at OU (and I'm an OSU fan) for several reasons, but I doubt anyone would blame him for reasons similar to the above.

Williams was at KU for a longer period, and it is basketball, but I think there is sufficient similarity

Here is the latest (but who really knows!):

From the Sports Animal:

Bob to meet with the FL AD either here in Norman or in Dallas. Would think it is here because so many reporters are camped out he would have to be a fly to escape Norman. At least our hotels are making money off of this!

Everyone says the announcement will be today (but then they said that yesterday!). I watched all the TV stations last night to get their take and it is unanimous -- Bob hasn't made up his mind, but will do so today after meeting with the FL AD. Most think he is going and will take some coaches with him while others are loyal to Mike! It is almost unanimous that Mike will get the job here and would expect him to be all over saying that he will NOT leave. He has already been talking the press about how much he has enjoyed his time in OK and loves it here!

Stay tuned to this roller coaster!

Funniest was that Jacksonville TV station had to withdraw their Stoops has signed a contract to go to Florida breaking news -- as Barry says the press continues to write fiction.

If Bob doesn't take this job, he will not take another one according to all reports. Mike Stoops will do just fine IMO! I really am getting tired of all these schools coming after Bob! If this goes on, it could hurt our recruiting unless Mike gets the job. I really, really resent Florida doing this to OU since we are just back on the National scene. I will always respect Bob and what he has done for our program but I am really tired of all this crap.

Yeah... "If a fan at Tennessee spit on a visitor, I assure you that other fans put a stop to it."

Nope, no one did anything. Actually I think the guy was trying to start stuff with other TN fans too.

For the record, I like Knoxville and had a great time there. I have rockytop on a cd and listen to it quite a bit during football season. I don't have a problem with Tennessee. Look at the last 10 years. I have no reason not to. It's the other way around. TN fans hate UF and especially their own son, Steve Spurrier. The fact that he was a Heisman WINNER and he wasn't ever recruited by a major university 1 hour from his house is pretty funny. Maybe that annoyed SS, so he took it out on TN. Revenge is best served cold....

Florida isn't doing anything to Oklahoma. Stoops and family WANT to come here. Why do you think he put it the clause in his contract when he first signed on with Oklahoma. He and Spurrier et al. are friends. Someone posted the top schools to coach at and Florida was clearly #1 followed by Texas I believe.

That clause about going to FL everyone talks about doesn't exist in the contract according to his brother Mike, his agent, and our AD! And according to his brother FL came calling, Bob called no one! He said that if Bob had not been contacted by the FL AD, Bob would not have even considered the job. I feel he is going but I am just irritated at all the crap surrounding the move.

If he wanted to go to FL, fine, but why not say immediately that is where I am going. REASON: According to two Stoops brothers -- Bob is torn between remaining in Norman and going to Florida. He has not slept or eaten in two days while wrestling with the decision. Now that is not someone that is 100% in favor of going to FL with no thoughts to OU -- the man is torn and frankly I resent all the FL stations/newspapers reporting that this FL was his only job like the Oklahoma job is absolutely nothing. Even Bob realizes that it is a great job here and doesn't know what to do.

Our press has handled it much better than Florida press as they admit they don't know what is going to happen as does his brother Mike! Would consider his brother, Mike, a much better source then someone anonymously that is quoted by FL TV stations/press. Frankly I hope Mike becomes our head coach because he appreciates what he has at Oklahoma! Not to say that I wouldn't be happy for Bob to stay but frankly I am tired of all the media circus!

Obviously can't handle stress. If Florida takes him, they deserve it.

Mom, The problem is that you believe what these guys say in Public. Our AD said he was totally shocked by the news when Spurrier resigned. Sometimes people have to say certain things even if they're not true. Of course Stoops isn't going to say that he's been talking to them for 2 months etc. You don't want to burn bridges and he probably really does like Oklahoma. The clause may not be true, I got that from another Freeper's post.

Never thought I'd see the day that OU football job was less prestigious than any school's, except for Notre Dame. I know that we live in a free society, but if a football coach is going to make upwards of $3 mil per year, can we stop this nonsense about college sports NOT being a big business?

I've resigned myself to Gonzaga losing Mark Few as its basketball coach within the next 6-12 months, especially if they make it to a 4th straight Sweet Sixteen berth. I don't know what he's making at GU (maybe $200-$250K?), but I can't fault him if a big name school comes calling with a package that will quadruple that.

There's only one place that I know of where the coach didn't leave for the $$$: Don Haskins of UTEP. However, given the bucks that are out there today, I'm not sure that he wouldn't follow the gold either.

BTW, Gonzaga is on ESPN tonight at 11:00 CST. They've already beaten Texas, St. Johns, and St. Josephs (at their place). I don't know how good UNM is this year, but I do know that The Pit is one tough place to play. Before our kids came along, my wife and I would always make the trip to Albuquerque from El Paso for that game. Those were the days when Antonio Davis, Tim Hardaway, Greg Foster, Jeep Jackson (RIP), Dave Feitl, Luster Goodwin, and Kent Lockhart, among others, played for 'The Bear'.

Saying ever so snide-like that Steve Spurrier makes 26 times what a college professor makes.

Isn't it amazing that people bring that fact up. It's economics 101.....when some professor can draw 80,000 people a week and demand billions of $'s from tv networks to watch his students conduct some lab experiment then he can demand million dollar contracts for himself.....until then why even bring it up....it is not a comparrison that can even be made....apples and oranges.......

Latest Update:

15 minutes ago Carol Stoops picked up the FL AD at Max Westenheimer Airport (OU Airport here in Norman) and drove him to their home! Will keep listening to The Sports Animal. Bob Berry, Jr., is going off the radio early to get to the TV station. At least our Norman economy is picking up and the students are even back yet! Pizza Hut has been busy with deliveries to everyone camped out!

Seriously, this whole deal is getting more bizarre by the minute with all the rumors! And some of the Sooner fans calling in are about to have a heart attack the way they sound. Everyone is reporting that Mike Stoops is a real favorite of Pres David Boren who just happens to be in NM right now!

Stand by, an announcement is expected shortly according to what Bob Berry is hearing! But then I went through that yesterday too! Only thing to do is keep a sense of humor! My son is stopping by the Switzer Center before coming over to see what he can find out. Trent Smith and the players are following the same stories that I am. Kev said that the players have not been informed of anything!
