I would disagree with you in this matter. The media do indeed care, and to a great deal for that matter.
They care in that they do not wish anyone to know that they failed to report something that is widely known as it would then show their culpability in not reporting something of major importance from the start. By their inaction in reporting these matters it shows their, the media's, duplicity and or culpability in covering things up by simply not reporting on them at all. Their "poster boy" would loose as much "face" as they would.
JMO...for what it's worth.
