Would somebody please explain why a guy who thinks his gigs as Nixon's speech writer and a talking head on Crossfire make him eligible to lead the free world deserves any attention? I mean, get real. Buchanan is an isolationist of the worst kind. He wants to build a wall around the United States, erect punitive tariffs (which would be met by other countries), and use our military solely to defend our borders. Thanks, but no thanks: We already experienced the 19th century the first time around. No need to repeat. This guy is a loon.

What qualifications would you set? Someone who never 'wrote a book', was 'never an advisor' to 3 presidents, never 'syndicated in the press' across the nation, never attended a 'world summit'?
Pat has made a good living on the open market. Since he graduated from college, the country has paid him well to speak, write and serve his country. The truth can't be stopped and Pat has more of it than any other 10 people coombined.

"I mean, get real."
Let's do get 'real'. We are largely a simple democracy which is holding on to its republic form and founding principles (individual sanctity and liberty) by tradition. We no longer teach our children theses ideas, and we no longer require imigrants to understand them let alone to believe them. The numbers are against us in holding on to what little we have left. The right has ideologically bought into democracy. Numbers are all that matter, and gues what, the vast majority of the world are racist and do not respect individual rights. What do we do? Which is worse isolationism or global socialism? There is no alternative to these choices in American politics.

punitive tariffs (which would be met by other countries)
He suggested a 15% tarriff. If that is punitive, then what do you call the income tax? Other countries already charge the same tarriffs we do now; that is the whole idea behind trade deals and GATT.
