Catching fire? -- For some time now, political observers assumed that Iowa Rep. Greg Ganske had a lock on the nomination to oppose incumbent Democrat Sen. Tom Harkin in the 2002 election. But something is causing a second look. That something is farmer Bill Salier, who is stumping the state and visiting Washington, looking for support for his effort to deny Ganske, a moderate Republican, the nomination. Salier is apparently amassing a following among grassroots activists, winning several straw polls including one in a county within Ganske's U.S. House district. Stranger things have happened.
TOPICS: News/Current Events; Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS:
This is an article that proves that Bill Salier, a farmer and Marine, can beat Rep. Greg Ganske. I have personally seen Bill speak and he is amazing. He has the whole crowd on their feet. He speaks about defeating liberalism and protecting the Constitution. When Ganske speaks he upsets and bores the crowd by speaking about federalizing airport security. Bill will beat Ganske and Harkin. The Republicans are the ones that will vote in the primary. The conservatives in Iowa are very upset with Ganske's liberalism. Ganske has in this past year: 1. Received a D- from the NRA 2. Supported the federal funding of embronic stem cell reasearch 3. Supported the Kennedy's Patients Bill of Rights 4. Voted in favor of federalizing Airport Security 5. Supports the federal funding of Planned Parenthood 6. Voted against the President on the Economic Stimulus package 7. Voted in favor of the Domestic Partners Act 8. Supports the McCain/Feigold Finance Reform Act This shows that Ganske is a RINO(Republican in Name Only)! We cannot win if we run liberal vs. liberal-lite. We must present a clear difference and Bill Salier can do this!

I hope you're right. Ganske certainly sounds like a typical Rino loser. We were just saying yesterday that it will take a real spellbinder to beat a senior incumbent like Harken, who is Chairman of the Agriculture Committee and known for bringing home plenty of pork.

Ganske also voted against Bush's Tax Cut in the first round. He really lost me there. I don't know of any pork Harkin brings to Iowa. In fact, we never see the ba$tard except every 6 years. I hated the man during clinton's impeachment he ran so fast to be first at every newscaster's mike he was out of breath when he got there. He was an embarrassment to the state of Iowa. He is nothing but a clinton butt kisser.

I assume he makes sure that the farm subsidies continue. Or at least that he tells Iowa farmers that they need to keep him in office to protect their subsidies. I wasn't praising the man, only saying that voters often continue to vote for senior politicians because they think they will give their state more influence. That's why incumbents usually are returned to office, unless the other party can offer the voters a really strong alternative.

You are right about the subsidies. Bill Salier is a farmer and when he goes to debate Harkin he will say "I am a farmer. When was the last time you crawled out of a combine at two in the morning? When was the last time you looked at a grain bin full of corn and thought how I am I going to market this through a disaster of a system at any degree of a profit, that you created Senator?" Subsidies are a price ceiling not a price floor. Why would someone pay more when they know that the government will supliment what they did not make. If the subsidies were not in place and the price for beans were $4 a bushle who would plant a bean? The free market works. Bill gets 1/3 of his money from the grains from the tax payers. Farmers do not farm to be a kept people they are free spirts. Bill will first concentrate on exports and breaking open foreign markets. Bill believes in free trade. China needs us more than we need them.

I know all three of the men who are the subject of this piece...
I have studied Tom Harkin's career in great depth...in fact I once wrote a book about him. He is without a doubt the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate. He isn't referred to as 'Commie Tommy' for naught.
When Greg Ganske took on Democrat Neil Smith in 1994, I was on the Republican State Committee. Smith was an Iowa institution of sorts, having served in the House for a generation. Ganske's victory was a huge success...it shocked many in the political world. But what did we gain, really? Ganske went to Washington and voted with Clinton as often as he voted with the Republican caucus.
Bill Salier has been working hard towards '02 for a couple of years now. The media and the political elites give him short shrift...just today, on 'Iowa Press'; the premiere Iowa political interview show that airs weekly on Iowa Public TV, the pundits still wouldn't mention the fact that Bill even exists...they talked of the 'Harkin-Ganske' race.
I have been hoping and praying for a long, long time that they will get their comeuppance in the form of a Salier victory, and it very well may occur. Bill has the hearts of the activists in the Iowa GOP...he is great on the stump, too.
I know Bill Salier. He is as fine a Christian man as you will find anywhere. He is a cutting edge conservative, too. He even favors the replacement of the federal income tax with a consumption tax.
All I can say is Go Bill Go!!

Thank you! I can't agree with you more. I also know Bill. I have worked very hard for Bill and will continue to do so. Those who have not heard of him can get more information at www.billsalier.com

Bill deserves our support. There are those who say Bill can't beat Harkin and those who say Ganske can't beat Harkin.
Truth is. None of us know.
I know Bill has a charisma and those who hear him, love him.
Go, Bill, Go.

I hope you guys elect him. We need some potential future presidents, and he sounds like a good candidate.
