dawkins is one of the best. An interesting offhand comment concerning 'deep in bush country', though, does highlight a "problem" with the political party known as "REPUBLICAN"; namely -> the accepted wisdom that it is the party of old-time-religion... meaning unscientific type people. and that is a problem. sigh. sure would like to drop the 'bible-belt' label from the Repubs...and make 'conservative' stand for conservation of the ideals of this country, and not for the denial of a modern world, that is ruled by laws not 'discovered' by various 'chosen people' in a particular desert on a particular planet on a particular time... anyway. Dawkins is truly a good thinker, and mouth-piece for modern science...

I love the writings of Richard Dawnkins, and although I should have expected the little dig at "Bush Country," I was disappointed to see it.

Interesting to see this article from Free Inquiry magazine. While I love the Skeptical Inquirer, I have never been able to tolerate much of Free Inquiry. They are both published by the Center for Inquiry, but FI has always had such a hostile tone, for all their supposed promotion of tolerance.

When you look at this universe from a creationist viewpoint, the story of creation is fixed in concrete and we then have to force all of the data points we see into that context. When we look at the creation of the universe as a scientist, we use the data points to create and revise models that best fit those observed data points.

even if all the evidence in the universe flatly contradicted Scripture, and even if he had reached the point of admitting this to himself, he would still take his stand on Scripture and deny the evidence. This leaves me, as a scientist, speechless. I cannot imagine what it must be like to have a mind capable of such doublethink...............DUH!!!! Perhaps DR. Gould should fess up and be an "honest evolutionist" and say "even if all the evidence points toward a CREATOR, A GOD, A DESIGNER, I will deny deeny deny!!!! I don't believe in God and therefore there is NO GOD..............

Good to see that you're not into pigeon-holing or stereotyping. Very scientific way of doing things.

Did you read this post? Dawkins is a pompous ass and thinks only his opinion counts. Only the "prestigious" universities have "authentic" degrees and everyone in the red states can go straight to hell as far as Dawkins is concerned. And that doesn't make you the least bit concerned.

"dawkins is one of the best"

Dawkins is a pin-head. His insult to BushCountry is just one of his ever flowing gartutious insults to anyone that disagrees w/ his augustness. In fact, from what i've read his essays are little more than non-stop insults and character assasinations of those "pathetic' believers.

Your wish that Reps disassociate themselves from Christians can be easily granted. All you need do is join the Democratic party. They are atheists just like you. They enjoy attacking Christians and the principles upon which this country was built. You'll feel right at home.

I don't view the whole evolution/creationist debate as being central to theism. apparently though, your arch-hero views it as central to his atheism. That is pathetic.
