More color photos of the North Korean spy ships' Christmas machine gunning and RPG-missile firing against the Japanese Coast Guard, in a major shooting/sinking incident in the East China Sea (largely unnoticed by world media and here on FR, but the first time since World War II Japan was involved in hostilities against an enemy power on the sea).

Now that Japan is on our side, I'm very glad to know that the Japanese still know how to fight. It has been more than 50 years, since last they fired on somebody in anger.

Well, as one who served in the (US) military for over five years in Japan -- some of that time on an installation shared by the Japanese Self-Defense forces -- I can make a couple observations:

1) The Japanese have gone a long way nationally to stamping out the Samurai spirit that they (with some reason) blame for having brought them to their knees in 1945. They have OVERdone it. There needs to be a resurrection of the warrior spirit. The military is scorned as a profession.

2) On the other hand, those who serve today in Japan's Self-Defense forces are highly dedicated, disciplined and committed to their calling. As I have posted previously elsewhere, they wonderfully epitomize TR's advice to "walk softly, but carry a big stick." People would be amazed if they knew how many fighter aircraft the Japanese now have. They would be surprised, because the Japanese have been very QUIET about their continued (and timely) military build-up.

3) I am no doubt biased, but I would greatly prefer having the Japanese as friends rather to having them as enemies.

Thanks for your post, and I'm glad to know that the Japanese have become serious in building their military. I'm very worried about the Chinese, and their posturing. If China invades Taiwan, this would signal that the Chinese is ready to build their Eastern empire, and Japan will be it's obvious next target. If Japan is strong militarily the chicom will think very hard, before they do any mis-calculation, thus perhaps preventing a 3rd WW. The USA will certainly not look the other way, while the chicom have a field day with the Japanese.
