Early Opinion Polls Look Bad for Gore
Al Gore keeps saying he has not decided whether to run for president again in 2004.
But a lot of Democratic voters have reached a decision on that matter, if a new CNN/USAToday/Gallup Poll has it right.
Asked whether the party's 2004 standard-bearer should again be Mr. Gore or "someone else," 66 percent of poll respondents said "someone else."
And there is more.
Two other new polls by Bloomberg and Fox News/Opinion Dynamics indicate that even if Mr. Gore should be renominated, he would lose again, by a ratio of more than two to one, if President Bush should again be the Republican nominee.

Who else is down South? Siegelman (Gov-D-AL) has to run for re-election in 2002. He could get beat by the right candidate-- AL was 56-42 Bush in 2000 and 50-43 Dole in 1996. He is out as Pres candidate and might lose Gov. as well.
I am not saying you are wrong that Barnes might be the Dem Prez nominee in 2004 when all said and done. BUT if so, it will be as the sacrificial lamb. Plus, he's got to run for Governor again in 2004 and might not be able to handle both duties. Do the DEMs want to give up GA governorship?

The dems aren't going to run to win the WH in 2004. The war on terrorism will not be over yet and there is nobody in the dem party who would take that on. They'll wait until all danger is over before they take a serious run. They will try to make sure they own the house and senate though and will try to make Bush's second term miserable. Like Reagan's second term, they won't succeed.

Gore almost won with only the very liberal states in the union.

"little-man Tommy" Daschle is going to be running scared by 2004, after the Jr. Senator from SD Tim Johnson loses his seat in 2002 to John Thune (run-John-run). And, once Daschle is the Minority Leader again after 2002 he will be in no strong position to launch a run.
Daschle won his re-election in the 1998 general election with 162,000 votes to his opponents 95,000 votes. This is a small man from a small place who thinks he speaks for America. If there was ever a chance for a 'celebrity' candidate to swoop in, move to SD, and run for Senator (ala the Hildabeast), this is the place. Calling Rush Limbaugh, do you want to be a Senator?-- Move to SD, it's close to the Mayo Clinic as well.

>>>>>Re your post #48 -- Thanks for that link. So, Dukakis won ten states, plus DC. Gosh, I really thought he did a lot worse than that>>>>>
Winning only 10 states out of 50 is not exactally what I would call a very good showing. I'd say he got his butt kicked.

I think your post #80 presents an interesting choice for Dems, and one they really blew off for the VP slot in 2000, but shouldn't have.

I agree with your post #73 -- I don't think there will be a Dem in the White House for a very long time, for the reasons you gave.

Meanwhile, the only sizeable groups that voted a majority for the GOP were White males and Protestant Christians. These two groups are shrinking in size proportionately every year and are being diluted in the Electoral College due to major demographic shifts (such as Florida).
This is not what happened in FL in Nov. 2000. GW actually won two key demographic groups down here, seniors and women. I think the Dems are in far more trouble than the GOP, since Dems did not win these two groups in a state like FL.

Re: Kerry --
At DU, they are saying MA Sen. John Kerry's negatives include his habit of hitting on married women -- looks like another Clinton White House in the making. LOL...

44. "Kerry hit on married women ..."
Kerry was hitting on married women who didn't want to be hit on. Someone who I know personally told me - but I'll never say who. But it could become an issue.

I really think Al Gore has already had his last run for office.

I can't think of who else has a military background, off the top of my head. Try John McCain. The mutant is a RINO anyway.

Re: your above post. That's true -- though I can't see him actually running on the Dem ticket. Can you, Dan?

McCain I expect to try again in the primary. He has more power as a GOPer instead of a dem.
If he switches in 2002, I can see him trying, but I don't think he can win the dem primary either. He's just not trusted.
To: Dan from Michigan
Yep, I think you summed up that one well. Thanks. And, Merry Christmas, Dan! :)

If Kerry isn't squeaky clean, I don't think he can do it. He'll make it close, but not close enough.
Merry Christmas to you as well.
