People get tax breaks all the time for buying telescopes and binoculars - provided their business buys them, it's a deductible expense. Now you try that outside of the framework of a business and you have a problem.

BTW, if you have a big problem with using the tax code to "mold behavior", take it up with your Congressman - not me. Whether I agreed with you or not, there's not a whole lot I could do about it, eh?!

At the moment I have this sucker Daschle on the line for a $150 tax credit to help the militia store their very own weapons safely.

It's the first decent thought he's had in about 20 years, so I don't want to scare him away.

Hook, line, and sinker.

Well, we either decide that it's ok and try to ride the gravy train or we decide that it is not ok and work to change the system.

Are tax codes supposed to be for raising money or for shaping behavior?

I tell ya what, if Congress will pass the Militia Armament Act that would award $xxx for the purchase of a miltary-style rifle, a basic load of ammo, initial cleaning supplies, and a storage cabinet, even if it was a community storage facility (ie, armory) I'd go for it enthusiastically. Not for the freebies, mind you, but because of the major, significant attitude shift that that would indicate.
