Whining Artist denied $42,000 tax payer's money to display 'art'

PORTLAND (AP) -- The denial of a federal grant to show off the work of an unconventional artist from Lewiston is raising questions about the role of politics in promoting art and culture.

The Maine College of Art in Portland sought $42,000 for the exhibit by William Pope.L, whose work takes on issues such as class and race.

The National Endowment for the Arts isn't saying why the grant was denied. The NEA had reportedly delayed its decision because of the exhibit's potential for controversy.

Pope.L expressed disappointment and said the decision jeopardizes the exhibit, which was planned for this summer. But he said the good thing is that people now get to know what their government wants culture to be.

The NEA approved eight grants for Maine, bringing the state a total of $143,000 to support poetry, dance, music,
visual arts and literature.

I could not agree more strongly. I went to a gallery opening last weekend, the artist was a young man born in Viet Nam & raise in the US. There were only 2 paintings not sold when I arrived & by the time I left they too were sold. His work is fabulous his name is Quang Ho. The NEA should be disolved (and I am an artist).

I've never seen "musea" as the plural of "museum" before. It has started to disappear (as well as great many other words and grammatical constructs) about a generation ago. As recently as 1995, Pittsburgh Post Gazette wrote of "stadia across the country," but no longer. The word "memoranda" is disappearing as we speak. We went in the opposite direction with "agendum," however, by adopting "agenda" as singular.

I know this is a minor point, but it is surprisingly relevant: all this and much more started to disappear shortly after the abandonment of liberal education in 1950s. It is into the vacuum so created that various "artists," such as those described in the report, subsequently stepped in 1960s. And it is this vacuum that is currently being filled with multi-culturalism, teaching us that there is no wrong, that all opinions, beliefs, cultures, works of art are "equal." Sounds appealing...

To me, the Latin roots of our language are not just a source of its beauty --- it is also one of the ties that we as a people have with our Western heritage. It is the denial of Western values in our society that makes me sad to see the disappearance of Latin words from our speech.

With everything else going on in education, this is the least of my worries, however. I am more disturbed when I hear about travel agents receiving requests to organize, for fear of flying, a bus tour from California to Hawaii.

Hey, one man's "art" is another man's "Friday night". Although for me, since we have gotten playstation2 our tv watching time has gone down in favor of 4 person James Bond a$$-whoopings. We have limited our tv to the simpsons, sportscenter, scrambled porn, and any and all football. Maybe south park if we feel like it. Yeah, the girl wasn't too happy about PS2, but I just told her it would give her more time to pursue her own interests.

Maybe, if instead of using the Wall Street Journal in his piece, he used the Washington comPost. Then I may reconsider his plight. /sarcasm

We need to defund the hate America movement. It starts here in the NEA. Let the *left* come and see these shows, but don't ask me to pay for it through my tax dollars!

In fact, I'll probably email the NEA now and ask them to stop fostering hate towards america....

That's it in a nutshell, though. Without funds scathed from sane American taxpayers as you and I who can discern good from evil, these things would die a quick death from a lack of money and the leftist, anti-American lot knows it....

I ain't under 25 ya punk...

Under "registration" there's a link at the top that says "student" and you fill out your name and institution and all that bullcrap and the next day they send you an email saying "Dear Maxwell, Thank you for registering for CPAC 2002! Your student scholarship has been approved, and we look forward to having you with us." For "sponsor" I just put "myself" so I don't know what all that scholarship sh!t is about.

If I do end up waddling up there it might be just for one day so I might just drive on back depending on how loaded I get. Otherwise I got a buddy up in that area... I'd invite folks but what with his wife expecting a second child and whatnot it'd be stressful enough with just my a$$... I'm a cheap-a$$ b@st@rd and I hate to spend $$ on anything other than smokes, sushi or hooch.

I don't know if they actually call up the school and check on your a$$ or not. They probably don't bother. I mean, who is going to want to lie to come to this conference. It's gonna be a bunch of fat drunk Republicans sitting around and b!tching about the economy, for God's sake, haha...

Not sure. My sister lives in the next town over actually. If I go it will be as a student. If they don't let me, I can't swing it financially. But it will be a last minute thing I guess. We'll talk about it on the 19th when we are raging in the city.

ok man so we're on for the 19th? I mean, if you say yeah then I'm gonna plan for bringing my drunken Irish @ss down to the City for the weekend.. you say you have some sort of beer stained couch for me to sleep on or something? I will also sleep on the floor as long as it's not in any close proximity to vomit puddles (that excludes my own vomit puddles, of course).

alright so if this is a go, how do you suggest getting down there? I don't want to drive in the city but if leaving my 98 Jetta outside the city and taking the trains in is gonna be safe, I can do that. Or, I can maybe get one of those cheap JetBlue flights for $45 round trip bwahahaha.

ok cause I mean, if we can register as students it might be cool to go to CPAC and just sit around and get hammered. hey, it beats sitting around alone in my living room and sucking down triples of vodka and tonic...
