NFL Officials got it RIGHT by overturning Cleaveland's first down (my title)

To all of the official bashers out there, time to eat a little crow... Take a look at the following excerpts from NFL reviewing end of Browns-Jaguars game (Click the link to read the entire article).

According to the article, the NFL reached a conclusion today that the "...correct procedures were followed and the correct decision made when replay overturned what had been ruled a fourth-down catch by Cleveland's Quincy Morgan."

BUT, BUT... All the Cleveland fans whine -- you CAN'T challenge a play when another play has been run -- EVERYBODY knows that.

Well, turns out that's not really how it played out. NFL's Director of Officiating Mike Pereira described what happened:

"The Browns were in a no-huddle offense trying to get to the line of scrimmage to snap the ball and stop the clock. Things were moving very quickly. When the pager went off (just before the snap), the referee allowed the play to take place before confirming with the umpire and the replay assistant that he was paged for a review."

Now you can sit here and debate about the rule all you want, but the fact is that the officials got it right AGAIN!

First the officials reviewed not the previous play but the one prior to it

This has already been addressed -- read the article.

then they overturned the proper call of completion made on the field without sufficient evident

In your opinion, of course, but not in the opinion of the referee who was working the game.

then they gave an in-your-face response to the Browns coaching staff's protest

What? Now you are just making things up.

then they call the game early, then they don't put the proper time back on the clock to complete the game.

I'm not sure about the time issue... As far as I could tell from the article, they started blowing their whistle when they were alerted by the buzzer (which happened a split second before the ball was snapped for the spike play).

So, should they have put back time on the clock? I'm not sure -- it depends on what the rule says and, unlike too many uninformed people here, I'm not afraid to say that I don't know exactly what the rule says. Regardless, putting time back on the clock would not have affected the game in any way, so it is really a moot point.

You should stop reading the propoganda put out by the NFL and start reviewing the film and the facts.

They never blew their whistles to stop the play, NEVER. They didn't even look down at their buzzers until AFTER Couch had spiked the ball.

As for you claiming that the in-your-face response was made up, it was not. Chi-townChief was perfectly accurate and the reason I know that is because I was AT the game and SAW it. Where you? Didn't think so.

Stop buying the press releases from the NFL and watch the film if you get the chance. You can't doctor the film. It's all there in technicolor.

Any comments on the performance of the New Orleans Saints' fans on Monday night, Dukie?

You mean, the fans who behaved as though they had been mating with Cleveland Browns fans? ;)

Well, maybe during Mardi Gras.

Actually, what I was wondering about was how the sequence of events went in New Orleans since I didn't get a chance to see any replays other than the bottle-throwing.

I've only read stories which hit the papers about the New Orleans game, so I couldn't really tell you about the actual sequence. (I heard one story spent so much time making wisecracks about the fans that it was almost like, I went to a riot and a football game broke out, so I'm even more lost; for some reason, they seemed to have the Cleveland game making a little more sense in the sequential translation.) But I do know that some people are beginning to make plans to upgrade their insurance in the unlikely event that the Saints and the Browns should ever meet in the Super Bowl...

Bottom line #1:
The behavior of the few Browns' fans who got out of hand can't be excused; bottles should never be tossed onto the field. I'm sure a few of these guys received visits from Cleveland's Finest this week.

Bottom line #2:
The refs and the NFL with their arrogance and attempt at a cover-up definitely pulled a Clinton; the referees should be suspended for at least half of next season and the NFL should come clean about instant replay.

Even if we acknowledge that the officials did NOT do the correct thing, you think that because of one bad call they should be suspended for half a season?!?! That's absurd.

Absolutely correct! This arrogant crew of referees should be suspended for ALL of the 2002 season.

As I mentioned before. They didn't make one bad call, they made many, in addition they missed many that should have been made.

That crew should either be broken up or dissolved. They were lousy.
