Karl Rove: Stayaway Christians Almost Cost Bush Election
Charisma News ^ | 12/13/01

STAYAWAY CHRISTIANS ALMOST COST ELECTION

Many Christians believe that prayer played a major role in sending George W. Bush to the White House, but stayaway believers came close to losing him the election, according to his chief political adviser, Karl Rove.

Rove said that one reason the 2000 election was so tight was that as many as 4 million Christian conservatives did not go to the polls, reported "The Chicago Tribune." Although the Bush campaign had expected 19 million evangelical voters to vote for their man, election returns revealed only 15 million turned out to cast ballots.

Speaking yesterday at an American Enterprise Institute seminar, Rove said the Bush campaign "probably failed to marshal support of the base as well as we should have," said the "Tribune." Rove added: "But we may also be returning to the point in America where fundamentalists and evangelicals remain true to their beliefs and think politics is corrupt and, therefore, they shouldn't participate."

Rove said that if the "process of withdrawal" went on it would be bad for the country as well as conservatives and Republicans. "It's something we have to spend a lot of time and energy on."

I think that many Christians did not vote in 2000 because of "uncertainty". Maybe they could see that George W. Bush sounded better, but they were not sure they could fully trust. As you know, often politicians promise many things but don't deliver. Bush seemed the best candidate, but was he actually the best? Many people had doubts that prevented them to cast their votes.

That's insane! As opposed to the other choice, Algore???

Those people sitting out the election for the reasons you sited above was a direct endorsement of Algore. Absolutely stupid reasons. It's one thing to feel that way, but actions speak louder than words.

Those people can thank US, who voted for Bush, who had no doubt he was the right candidate for being in the White House today.

Sometimes I think the Republicans are worse than the Democrats.

Only in that you could consider the oh-so-respectable Tom Landry on the sidelines "worse" than the muddied Clintonesque quarterback who actually runs the ball ... simply because the man in the hat calls the plays.

Abortion is a GOP policy.

Do you remember the joke about the old bull and the young bull? That's my plan.

I'm a pragmatic idealist. We cannot outlaw abortion except in cases where the mother's life is in danger right away, but we CAN start working at the edges, and building the consensus to reach that point now.

Why not work the edges? What is wrong with getting small chunks?

I think you're either too big a fool or fraud to debate with. Go ahead and take the last word.

I'm a pragmatic idealist.

Don't kid yourself.

If you believe in the alchemy of pragmatism you're a utopian, not an idealist.

"...proposing a budget larger than anything Clinton ever dreamed up and expanding the size and scope of the federal government is not the direction I want to see the country led."

You DO realize that Clinton reduced the budget, and the number of "federal employees", by underfunding the armed forces right?

Did not replace a single piece of ordnance, no pay raises for the troops (many articles about our armed forces needing welfare to support theor families), and no repair/replacement of equipment?

here's my 2 cents:

George W. Bush is a great president. I don't think that we could have known how solid, how moral, how strong he was prior to the election, but he is going to go down in history as just that.

As president, he can't fix everything overnight that eight years of radical liberal rule imposed. I think, after a year, he has made remarkable progress.

Part of that progress is working to change the hearts and minds of the American people on moral issues. How he speaks, what he says, what he doesn't say, all this is bringing the American people to a greater collective character.

As Christians, we MUST vote. If there is absolutely no one on the ballot that we can support (we need to think of down ticket races, too, not just President and Governor, but State Senate and Congress and State Assembly or State Rep, however your state does it.) If there is no one we can support, we should cast a blank ballot. It will get us into the habit of going to the polls and voting in every election so that when there is someone good, we will vote for them.

We only have ourselves to blame for the immorality of our country. We were too complacent, too uninvolved in the political process, too content in our own lives to look at what was happening. It impacts all of us, even if we try and lead moral lives.

It's like the story of the drowning man who, waiting for God to save him, ignored the three boats God sent him. God has given us the opportunity to change the world by our vote because we live here, in America, the most free country in the world. We must use all tools at our disposal to elect good, moral men like George W. Bush.

Remember, we are all sinners. I can forgive past transgressions in I am confident there will be none in the future.

We cannot outlaw abortion

Because -- to quote the GOP -- "ABORTION is VITAL to the solution" of population control at home and abroad.

Get it straight. The "I'm personally opposed, BUT ... " party is the ARCHITECT of our successful population control strategy. No nation has ever had a successfuly population control strategy without abortion.

Abortion is a GOP policy.

Bump. Of course gutting the military, as pointed out in another reply, is Bush policy too.

"When the Republicans had the power to change the law, they tried."

Wrong!

You don't think that passing a law overturning partial birth abortion 3 times is trying?

I give up. Is possible for the republicans to ever please you?

Right now there are conservatives in congress who are trying to fight the good fight. The liberals demonize them for it. And our response it to complain about them. It's a wonder that they try at all.

If you really want to complain about not trying. Then instead of complaining about the republicans in congress, why don't you complain about the do-nothing conservatives who FAILED to raise enough public support to force clinton to sign one of the bills, who FAILED to change enough of the pro-death senators' votes to override the vetos, who FAILED to reelect prolife senators, who FAILED to defeat these pro-death senators.

Bush is a LIBERAL and you folks are suckers if you don't believe it. Do you really think that Hilary would appoint more favorable justices? Especially with a Democratic Senate?

That's right - I guess you prefer Hilary to become President the next time. Get real - or real politik. You represent about 5 - 10% of the voting public. ALL mainstream politicians are ALWAYS going to be of the left of you - there just isn't any room to your right. So, knowing that ALL serious contenders are to your left, HOW far to the left do you want to go - to Bush or to Clinton? That is reality. Naderites found everyone, even Gore, to their right, but they weren't practical and now they are living with a President far to their right.

I'm sorry. I don't agree with one thing you wrote in your post. Diversity of views is what makes the world go round I guess.

If you think Bush is a liberal just wait untill Hillary, Gore, Or Liberman become pres. You can't always have exactly what you want in a president. You should know that. Just think how terrible things would be if Gore had won!! Bush is pro life. Gore and all the other liberal Dems. are not. Remember that! D.B.D.
