Another good rule is to trust your gut feelings. The feeling may be wrong but it's better to be too cautious than to be dying or dead from not being cautious.
It's better to have a knife than nothing at all, but I would rather carry extra ammunition than a knife.
I would not underestimate a man with a knife either. A knife in the hands of someone who can use it may close and kill you before you even have a chance to get your gun out. Ballistic armor won't stop a knife unless you have trauma plate.

I've seen one of those little Spyderco knives go right through the titanium trauma plate in a Kevlar vest.
Also, your minimum safe distance from a person armed with a knife is approximately 21 feet. Anyone within that distance literally doesn't have time to draw a firearm, let alone fire one at an assailant.
My rule is if I see someone with a knife, shoot them as many times as necessary to stop them from moving.

The Tueller drill has established that somebody who's motivated can cover 21 feet in one and a half seconds and stick a knife in you! How many people can draw from a holster and hit a K zone in one and a half seconds? Fewer than think they can...
