TEN RULES OF A GUNFIGHT

1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice.

3. Only hits count.

4. If your shooting stance is good you 're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.

5. Keep shooting until the threat no longer exists; then stay sharp until somebody with a badge tells you to freeze.

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gun fight, bring a long gun and a friend.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of calibre, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting you should be reloading or running.

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependant on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty

Actually the best addendum I have heard is:

11. Bring a friend with a gun, preferably two.

I don’t see anyone fantasizing about being in a gunfight, although there are a few people discussing what they might do and how they’ve trained in case one happens. The difference is that Joe Torre is never going to bang down your door at one o’clock in the morning and demand that you take the last at-bat in game seven, nor is Tony Stweart going to rush into Wendy’s to insist that somebody drive the car for the last few laps.

Real criminals have run into those places and started shooting. Good people got killed because they weren’t ready for it. I see no harm in preparing. Besides, it’s fun.

"The handgun would not be my choice of weapon if I knew I was going to a fight. I’d choose a rifle, a shotgun, an RPG or an atomic bomb instead."

Atta boy!

Unless the "threat" is the one wearing the badge!

In that case, quietly leave the scene. And for God's sake, don't write a song about it!

The only proper use of the words 'fair' and 'fight' in the same sentence goes something like this: "There was a fist fight at the county fair..."

If you find yourself in a fair fight, prepare better next time. If there is a next time.

I don’t fight fair. I fight to win.

Yeah, I love the “rules” about how you’re not supposed to pull hair, kick balls, etc. Shoot, if I’m in a fight, it’s because the rules already failed to do their job. I’ll punch, shoot, stab, bite, whatever opportunity presents itself. If you lose, they won’t be handing out runner up awards for good sportsmanship later.

Our martial arts instructor had another little guideline: “The fight’s not over...”
