I had a similar problem with two different com port scenarios (a printer and a scale ticket reader) on one terminal running windows on a Novelle dedicated server configuration. The com port was "seized" by the windows operating system no matter what I did. So to bypass the automatic plug-and-play (or whatever it is) on reboot so the system would respond to mode and other com port commands, I have the users disconnect the devices altogether before booting (LOL!)

Nice approach! I'm trying to configure these printers using the RDP protocol because the client is balking at the Citrix add-on ICA client. It's been driving me nuts. I can get it to work on my test-bed, but not at the site. Someone else configured the on-site network, so it must has something to do with permissions or policies.
